The Australian hikes subscription prices: ‘We do not take this decision lightly’

The Australian is increasing the cost of its digital subscription plans, a decision the paper’s editor-in-chief, Michelle Gunn, says wasn’t taken lightly “given the cost pressures being felt by Australian households”.

From October 11, the price of a digital subscription will leap from $8 per week to $11 a week –  a $12 leap each month.

The publication informed its readers of the price jump via email on Tuesday morning.

“We pride ourselves on serving a community of informed Australians with world-class reporting and analysis as well as commentary that offers a diverse perspective on the issues that matter, ensuring you can continue to receive the high quality journalism you have come to expect from us,” a message from Gunn read.

“I am writing to let you know that we will be increasing the price of your subscription. We do not take this decision lightly given the cost pressures being felt by Australian households.”

This comes after Nine Publishing announced a similar price hike for the Sydney Morning Herald in June. The Herald increased pricing for a digital subscription with two weekend papers from $36.80 to $43.20 per month.
