Nine Radio announces major programming changes and departures for Perth’s 6PR

Nine Radio has announced some big changes to the programming of Perth’s 6PR, including some key departures.
In a note sent to staff on Wednesday, seen by Mumbrella, Nine Radio managing director Tom Malone announced the movements.
“The advertising market in Perth has been tough – down 16% in the past 5 years, and rising costs have added extra pressure on our financial performance,” Malone wrote.
“To ensure the station’s sustainability, we’re making adjustments that will help us return to profitability over the next 12 months, while still delivering the quality content our listeners love.”
The changes include the departures of afternoons host, Julie-ann Sprague and The Nightshift’s Tod Johnston. Meanwhile, the Wide World of Sports programme has been extended to two hours (6pm-8pm) – though Nine has told Mumbrella the show will remain local – and Tony McManus’ 9pm show will now be broadcast to both Perth and Melbourne.
Oli Peterson will take over the drive shift from 2pm-6pm and Money News will run from 8pm-9pm prior to McManus hitting the airwaves.
Malone’s note continued: “Unfortunately this means that we’ll no longer get to hear Julie-anne Sprague or Tod Johnston on our airwaves. This is a sad and tough day for the Afternoon and Nights teams along with our listeners, and we deeply appreciate their contributions to 6PR.”
“We’re also reinvesting in our Direct Sales capability to boost revenue, combining cost reductions with efforts to strengthen our future. This combined approach of maximising content, reducing cost, and investing in sales will provide for a more certain future for 6PR.”
The changes are expected to come in effect from this coming Monday (21 October).
Mumbrella has contacted Nine Radio for further comment.
Won’t be listening to 6PR of a night. Tony Mack is so up himself. Cannot tolerate him.
Absolutely disgusted with 6pr board needs to be changed ,I will definitely be changing stations as do not want to listen to ramblings from the eastern states,WA has amazing presenters and the disgusting people that think they are so wise from east shame on you .I have never changed my station but after listening to this station for over 50years I shall be kicking it to the kerb as there will be nothing of interest only a few annoying idiots beating their own drums.shame she on all.Big thanks ,to Todd and Julianne for their amazing broadcasting skills and empathy for the people of this city,Big bouquet for long-standing announcer the one and only Jon Lewis
Please while you’re at it get rid of the 2 clowns on the breakfast show. Karl can stick to sport but Mills needs to be retired off…he’s a dinosaur!?
And here I was crossing all my fingers and toes that Simon Beaumont was coming back ?
I love Fred Mafrica on Saturday nights I am so glad he stayed with 6PR and I enjoy listening to him , why dont they give him weekend breakfast or drive he would be great , fair warm and caring and always helpful ..at least 6PR has kept fred well done
6PR is the Labor bashing radio station we all need. Everything is Labor’s fault. Just ask Oli or Gary.
Worst radio station ever for unbiased truth in reporting.
I’ve been listening to 6PR when Graham Maybry was on and Howard Sattler now since I’ve got rid of Tod I will not be listening to 6PR again rest in peace
I will miss Julianne. She’s intelligent, quirky and funny. Hope I get to hear her on another station.
I couldn’t understand why Jon Lewis, after all his years with 6PR wasn’t offered the time slot they gave to Tod Johnson!!! We often listened to Jon and though we listened to Tony and the new format from Melbourne it wasn’t the same and we stopped listening! We were not sure if we would listen to Tod’s night shift but found we liked Tod and although we don’t call in we enjoyed it, now that is going! Thankfully we have Fred back on Saturday night!!
First of all , why cant anyone spell ‘lose’ these days it’s not ‘loose’.
Chrissy waa always better than Julieanne
Mr Senario Karl needs to go.its ‘Picture’
Not ‘Pitcher:’
Phillipa Maher makes too many mistakes, reading the news.
Oh and did you know Gary Adshead is 58?
He tells us every show
6pr and the Nightshift crew of Tod, Kane and Despeen. ( spelling ? )
Who not only bring the community together with humour, music, emergency warnings, and pick up the many who can be down only to be picked up by a great conversation or a music selection.
I wonder what impact this in my mind is a stupid decision could have on listeners who like me escape the Hum Drum depression of what journalism is seemingly sinking into by turning on the Night Shift and escaping stupid tv like the Block. ( don’t get me started )
Hopefully another station has the foresight to adopt this crew and many loyal and jovial listeners.
The same goes for Julie Anne and her dulcet tones and refreshing program.
Not only going to miss the programs
I’m going to miss the listeners.

That Tony McManus is such a bore. Only ridicules callers after they hang up if he disagree with them. He’s a typical hard left socialist…never wrong. He needs to go.

Well what can I say, news-ads-sport-ads-weather-ads-traffic-ads. (that’s the start of every hour, and half hour in the mornings). !!!!
I would think the average hour on 6PR would be about 80% ads.
MIllsy & Karl are very boringly predictable, their talk back subjects are quite ridiculous (eg ‘ how much over the drink-driving limit have you been” (very irresponsible).
I used to like the saturday morning sport show (9-12), now all we get is an hour and most of that is ADS.
Sorry 6PR. after 40 years i’m changing channels. Can’t stand it any more
Goodbye
I can’t believe how many ads are on, news-ad-sport-ad-weather-ad-traffic-ad. (that’s the start of every hour). Millsy and Karl are very boring, having ridiculous talkback subjects such as ‘how much over the drink-driving limit have you been” (very irresponsible).(who cares!!!)
smacks of desperation.I used to love saturday mornings sport show (9-12) (now we get one hour and that’s filled with ADS). I would think the average hour on 6PR would be about 80% ads.
I will be tuning out after 40 years of listening, just can’t stand the ads overkill any longer.
PS . the rumour file= 9/10 of the rumours are silly little stories that aren’t rumours, they are facts .They even have photos in some cases to prove it. how are these rumours!!!
Let’s face it 6pr us slowly declining I used to listen to 6pr all the time mainly for current affairs and good news items it’s become very predictable and in a lot of cases boring same old stories rehashing.
Karl and Millsy are very predictable, playing the good cop bad cop on any topic just to ster up listeners points of view .
It’s a new generation now and there just not listening to ol farts talking crap .
Revenue down to to constant labor govt bashing attacking labor on everything
Need to rename it lnp propganda show
Want advertising revenue to return you need to have balanced radio station not biased on one side politics
And forget the fake news
How disappointing 6PR. I used to enjoy listening to Jon Lewis and Fred then you cut their programmes now Tod. Think you need to ask the listeners opinions. You will be Losing me too. Not the same anymore. I hope I can catch my favourite presenters on another station where they are truely appreciated.
At last, some changes in that both midday to 1500 hrs and from 1800 hrs to the following morning when Gary comes on and the pick of the CROP, Oliver P comes on. What a pleasure it is to listen to him.
Really, I’m in the opinion that 6pr, since Bob M & deceased George G has gone to the dogs.
ABC radio sounds better every day from what I’ve been listening to around the traps.
Finally 6pr can’t go much further to the dogs.
Boycott 6pr and channel 9 and all that is associated with the media. Crap in their own nest in the end
Well yrs of listening to 6PR I’m going to be finding a new station to listen to….as it is now listening to Tony McManus is so painful and nauseating he needs to go quickly…..how boring all about him with his mate John series, and the boring serial and him always so right about subjects put to him 6pr are scratching the bottom of the barrell, So full of himself enough from me. Boring conversation about E/S BORING. i just read Bob’s comments I feel exactly as he does. WHY DON’T YOU LISTEN TO YOUR LISTENERS NOT THE PROFIT,, 6PR WILL CERTAINLY LOOSE ALL ITS LISTENER, the only person I will listen to is Fred from Perth. Also no Females to listen to and all the interesting subjects I listen to and enjoy very much. All gone, shame on 6PR Mannagment
I am so disappointed in 6PR owners and management. i have been listening to 6pr for over 50 years and now I will be changing stations.
I was still listening during the breakfast and most of the day now I do not listen to the morning show and all the afternoon until Todd came on. i loved his show full of humour and some very interesting guests during the night. When Jon Lewis departed I stopped listening after 12.00am. Now I will be listening to another stations as your so called programs have no interest for me.
Maybe your board should dbe dismissed after seeing the report about them. Sorry to see you go Todd, Hurricane, Despeen. thank you for your hard work.
This is why I don’t listen to 6pr anymore gone to the dogs
I will miss Julianne Sprague. She is intelligent, quirky and funny. I hope I get to hear her on another station.
Boys club?? Tod has a huge following at night. Won’t go down well, Tod is very kind and funny. McManus is quite rude, arrogant and cuts off people. Why two hours for sport?? Really!!
Having lived my whole life between Sydney and Perth, I saw this ridiculous pattern starting in Sydney when 2UE and 2GB ditched the very popular, profitable, successful and unique George and Paul weekend show after 20 odd years, George was forced out when the station wanted to change the programme hours once again and Paul (B Kidd) lost popularity without his mate George.
Moving back to Perth ten years ago it was great to hear 6PR still had pride in being a unique and popular Perth station (although I continued to tune in to George and Paul on the weekends until their demise) so I then exclusively had my radio tuned into 6PR.
Last year I noticed that they were including more and more sports content, and I started shopping around for general interest local programmes until ABC Perth introduced sports weekends! It seems that almost every station in Perth has weekend sports or music, they are all broadcasting the same game, aargh!
At least we still had interesting and informative day programmes and wonderful overnight shows night for night owls, insomniacs and shift workers, not forgetting the international listeners, but then Jon Lewis and Fred Mafrica were axed without warning, how stupid is that??
I’m told that, like some large department stores, management are wanting to appeal to a younger clientele/audience, and are being advised by new fresh faced advisers straight out of uni with little life experience, which probably accounts for some of the unappealing advertising that is shoved in our ears daily, like the “I just can’t stand it “ man, I have no idea what his ad is about, I tuned out whenever it came on.
I’m aware that everything is now run from Sydney which is nothing like happy, friendly, casual lifestyle Perth, so please 6PR, grow a spine and stand up for local icons, listen to the listeners who support you, we really don’t want to become like Sydney, and I don’t want to be jolted awake at some ungodly hour by the likes of Ray Hadleys country music…..it’s daylight savings over there people! Yes, I have noticed that we now have repeats of our morning programmes overnight, ho-hum! and now Julianne and Todd are being shafted, I’m afraid that 6PR has shot itself in both feet now, a lot of people are moving on. I don’t expect that anyone will read this, but at least I will feel a little better for getting it off my chest TTFN
Always have 6pr on. But what difference will it make with what i have to say. Here is my 6th pennith worth. Bring back Simon Beaumont.
Oh my – First John Lewis & Fred ? and now Todd, absolutely no reason for me to continue listening to 6PR…….McManus is a JERK, can’t stand him and he brings nothing to 6PR – wouldn’t waste 5 minutes listening to him!
6pr and the Nightshift crew of Tod, Kane and Despeen.

Not only going to miss the programs
I’m going to miss the listeners.

These program changes and cost cutting must have been made by an accountant.
When I completed my Business Degree my astute mentors in Corporate business always said to earn more revenue their needs to be revenues spent. On the best employees in the business to make advertisers want to spend more of their advertising budget with the business. That’s how you increase $$$$.
Keep cutting costs and revenue will follow!
Extremely short sited.
Good luck to Gary Adshead, management have shown him little respect and under estimated his ability.
To all past and future 6PR Team, every strength and every success in the future.
bring back fred mafrica
It is all aboutprogrammeoing one stion sacking people to save pages they did this with my local radio station northsound radio dj djs boadcast from glasgow only 3loal stsions in aberdeen scotlandowned ny bauer media germany.
The breakfast with milsy and Karl are the ones who should have gone they are horrible!
Why would anyone want Beaumont back on radio? Excruciating mumbling fool.
I will miss JulieAnne I used to tape her shows and use them at night so I could get some sleep
Glad Julieanne has gone-awful lisp drove me mad. Loved Jo McManus. Todd one of the best along with Gary.
Some 50 years listening to 6pr,and there have been many changes ,all in the direction of profitability ,Gary and Jenny ,in its day was the most listened show on Perth radio ,yes listened ! Not background noise, while working ect ,
Maybry 8 to 12 had a national audience ,and many international people too! Loved by thousands ,who remembers his sign off song 😉
An absolute treasure ,and lifesaver for many ,I remember graham filling in his listeners in on a call ,he took late in the program , where it went on far beyond 12 off the radio,,the person was able to get help, that man ,and show saved lives !
Jon Lewis …. A legend ,who kept us slain till sunrise ,
All those days are gone ,
Progress they say ,
Today even the oxygen my wife needs ,are supervised via Queensland ,and work on eastern standard time !
Working in an exclusive branded retail shop ,the eastern states w/ sales never understood the wa market ,even to this day ! What works in Melbourne should work in Perth um NO !
We are different cattle over here ,
Shame 6 pr executives still don’t understand this basic issue ,
Even on their executive wage !
Bean counters rule ,
Mercedes Benz almost went broke listening to them !
Understand who are your clients, cater for them best you can ,
Think outside the box sometimes ,
If you have a product worthy of the marketplace you wish to have
Profits will flow ,
Creating a market is long ,slow and hard ,
Specially in radio,
Ch 7 is the tv station in Perth ,
They slightly changed the news format ,and bang ! Got hammered by its large and loyal audience
6pr need to be smart and look at their history ,and build on that success
Replacing Chris Ilsley was the beginning of the end.
I think it’s very sad that the Afternoon Show has ended – again just greedy executives at the top wanting more $$
I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to the Afternoon Show over the last few years, with Jo McManus, then Julie-Anne Sprague (and occasionally Chrissy Morrissey) – the show makes me laugh, it’s very informative, genuine, and the segments are always interesting!
I wish all the crew of the Afternoon Show all the best – onwards and upwards to them 🙂
