Nine’s record $925m NRL deal ‘puts pressure’ on AFL rights negotiations say media buyers
The Nine Network is thought to have set its sights on securing at least one AFL game a week despite announcing this morning it had tied up the NRL free-to-air rights until 2022 for a $925m price tag.
Media buyers have welcomed the NRL deal, which sees the TV network paying $185m a year for the rights between 2018 and 2022, up 76 per cent on the previous deal which saw Nine pay $105m a year, but warned it piles the pressure on the AFL to secure a similar price rise.
“The AFL will become critically important,” Mark McCraith CEO of Maxus told Mumbrella today. “The other networks are now going to have a red hot crack at the AFL.
Rugby League is dead. By morons for morons. This is the nail in the coffin. This is type of response I was looking for from the AFL loving inner-city snobs – prease… feed me!!
Why on earth would the AFL want to sell one game to Nine for the Southern States? Yes, they want top dollar, but they also want a network that will champion their sport, brand and cause. They definitely wont want to be second fiddle to the NRL and therefore I highly doubt you’ll see the AFL on Nine in 2018.
in 2015 dollars its a lot. in 2020 dollars not so much.
On the other hand, for 2015 FTA audiences you can make it work. in 2020 is there an FTA audience?
Why would you commit dollars w/o digital or at least PTV to ensure you can access an audience in 2020?
Nine in NSW and Queensland do not take the ALF seriously so why would the AFL take Nine seriously? Nine do a good job in promoting the NRL, but struggle with the other football codes. Yes, Nine does have the Footy Show in Melbourne, but it is so far down market it must be embarrassing to the AFL.
