Nine’s State of Origin broadcast the most-watched in the year to date

Last night’s State of Origin match on Nine, which was the first time an Australian free-to-air TV network aired a program in 3D, was also the most-watched show in the year so far, reaching a peak Australian audience of an estimated 4.2m viewers.

The result – which saw a five city metro average of 2.455m viewers – beat the record the rugby league competition set last year when the first clash of the series saw nearly 2.3m tune in.

The pre-match broadcast of the game was the third most watched show for the night, with 1.633m metro viewers, just behind Ten’s Masterchef with 1.687m, according to preliminary overnight OzTam data.

The one minute peak metro audience was just over 2.8m. Factoring in regional audience too, the average audience was 3.6m, with a peak of 4.2m.
