‘We did not hack Facebook’, claims Cambridge Analytica
The analytics firm at the centre of a global data-harvesting scandal has hit back against claims it illegally hacked Facebook users’ details for political gains.
In a lengthy statement posted overnight, Cambridge Analytica denied violating any laws in the wake of a whistleblower’s claims that the company used data harvested from Facebook users to target US voters during the 2016 elections.
Cambridge Analytica didn’t hack facebook – I agree with them.
They posted quizzes and other nonsense legitimately on facebook using facebook apps – as many other similarly dodgy companies do.
Many silly facebook users then clicked on these, and clicked on the ‘Allow this app to access your data’ box – and behold, the damage was done.
So folks, next time you’re tempted to click on one of those “What will I look like when I’m old” or “What’s your IQ” thingies on facebook, and you elect to grant god-knows-who access to your data, you really have no one but yourself to blame.
So they hacked Facebook users then….
…with the full consent of those users
This scandal is a total beat up.
Because the US media don’t like Trump they see this as some sort of treason and corruption, but it’s just Facebook operating as it does, allowing advertisers to target certain demographics. Albeit demographics that don’t read the fine print when joining up and doing inane quizzes.
If people are up in arms about it, leave Facebook. Nothing’s for free.
The traditional media also have a vested interest in denigrating Facebook as they are losing millions of dollars in advertising revenue to the platform.
