Patriots Day debuts at number three, Lion retains weekend box office top spot
Roadshow’s Patriots Day, starring Mark Wahlberg, managed third at the weekend box office while Australian film Lion held on to the number one spot for the third consecutive week.
According to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia report, Patriots Day, directed by Peter Berg (Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon), tells the story of Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis’ actions in the lead up to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, collected $1.189m over the weekend.
Since its debut on February 2, the film has made $1.319m.
Patriots Day pleased the LA Times but was unpopular in Boston. Wrote in the fictitious character played by M. Wahlberg and wrote out the black policeman who was killed by the terrorists.
