Potential blow to press self regulation as The West withdraws from Australian Press Council
The already under-threat self regulation of the Australian press has suffered what appears to be a major blow with the withdrawal of Seven West Media – which owns The West Australian newspaper and Pacific Magazines – from The Australian Press Council.
The organisation issued a statement saying:
4 April 2012 — Seven West Media announced today that it has withdrawn from the Australian Press Council.
The group editor in chief Bob Cronin said the company was putting in place an alternative independent complaints-resolution body, which would guarantee accountability of all the group’s publications. He said the company would release full details of the plan in coming weeks and would make no further comment until then.
I see this move by Seven West as very suspicious.
Why would the only daily newspaper in western Australia (which took control the Seven TV network against the regulations set up previously which ruled that Print Media and TV stations must not be owned by the same company).
Are we seeing that percived future conflicts of interest are like to arise and this is a crafty way of avoiding them?
We are already well aware of how difficult it is to get comments printed that point out truths about the west Australian media, so it is obviouse that from now on it will tottally imposible.
Establishing an “alternative independent complaints-resolution body” does not “guarantee accountability,” it means you’ve removed accountability. But then, anything might be better than sharing a table with Fairfax Media.
so Leckie is bored …
its Ok, Wont Gina’s new paper keep things under control?
Disgraceful.
Its a waiting game now…
