Presto signals Telstra deal as it looks to grab more subscribers ahead of Netflix launch
The head of Presto has revealed it has made a deal with part-owners Telstra to provide access to the online streaming service alongside the telco’s other products across its platforms.
Shaun James revealed the move at the Broadcasting Digital Media Summit this morning telling the audience: “You will start to see announcements from Telstra in the next 24 hours in terms of an exclusive deal we have done there to distribute Presto alongside Telstra product and services.
“We recognise we need to get it out there to as many people as possible as quickly as possible.”
Presto can do all it likes.
It’s all in Standard Definition and is in Stereo 2.0 sound.
Which works perfectly with a Rank Arena TV from the 80’s but no so much for U/HD TV’s and stereo setups.
@Josh – tell me more about your internet connection?
@Tosh – what’s it go to do with Internet connection?
If you have a good one, you wouldn’t bother with Presto, you’d chose STAN or Netflix (or HULU or some other foreign provider) because you want the best content at the best price.
Presto is the same price as other offerings for lesser features than the core consumer who wants this service would expect.
FWIW, I have Telstra cable at 112Mbps.
Josh, unless you’re happy with either a lot of buffering or a long wait to download, you’ll never use HD. I’m on a solid Telstra cable service and struggle to watch shows Stan at the lowest quality.
Sure the big players and their marketing engines will drive sales and ensure people subscribe, but downloaders will continue to download. These are the big consumers of content and until there is a ‘one stop shop’ for all of it, not some here and some there, this won’t change. I’m no expert and I’m sure there is a ****load of red tape, relationships and egos that need to be busted to make this happen, but surely someone, somewhere can see the value in this and is trying to make it happen.
@Stevo – Have you got the speed boost on? Without it, its considerably throttled. Only issue I have is the 500GB monthly cap.
But heres the minimum speeds for the various sites, which are easily attainable on Telstra cable.
Netflix US
– 0.5 Megabits per second – Required broadband connection speed
– 1.5 Megabits per second – Recommended broadband connection speed
– 3.0 Megabits per second – Recommended for SD quality
– 5.0 Megabits per second – Recommended for HD quality
– 25 Megabits per second – Recommended for Ultra HD quality
HULU
– For Standard Definition videos we recommend a downstream bandwidth of at least 1.5 Mbps for a smooth playback experience.
– For High Definition videos we recommend a downstream bandwidth of at least 3 Mbps for a smooth playback experience.
WWE
The maximum bitrate we support on our Premium video player is 3Mbps which is a very good quality for web video.
Stan
– 1.5 mbps for stream ability
– 2.5 mbps for Standard Definition (SD)
– 3.5 mbps for High Definition 720p (HD 720p)
– 6.5 mbps for High Definition 1080p (HD 1080p)
Presto
Internet connection with minimum speed of at least 3Mbps required to view Presto.
