Network Ten’s digital boss: ‘Industry should worry less about retention’

Mindshare’s Katie Rigg-Smith, Telstra’s Adam Good, Mi9’s Mark Britt, REA’s Jonas Jaanimagi and Ten’s Rebekah Horne.
Network Ten’s digital boss has told a forum that the media and marketing industry should be less worried about industry churn and retention, arguing many employers are too focused on keeping their young workforce and should be more open to project orientated work.
Rebekah Horne, chief digital officer of Ten, told a panel of digital bosses at last week’s Mumbrella 360 conference that she is happy to turn over staff if it helps the company and employees.
“I think there is plenty of skill out there,” said Horne. “My approach is to have less expectation in terms of retention and to get the best people in, and happily turn them over, then get the next people in.
Is there anyone at TEN who makes any sense these days? So anyone experienced and committed to an employer who expects to get paid market rates is told to ‘leave if you don’t like it’. Good grief.
Can somebody please remind me of ten’s great digital successes that give weight to this advice?
I trust Rebekah Horne is happy to be one of the turned over staff “if it helps the company and employees”.
” get the best people in, and happily turn them over, then get the next people in”
Seems to be working great for Ten so far … wonder if the same principle could be applied to their C-suite and not just the worker bees they can assign blame to and ship out when their executive decisions don’t work.
So hire young guns, work them hard while they’re still enthusiastic, then toss them out like trash to make way for the next crop of naive graduates?
She sounds like a joy to work for.
Way to bolster staff morale there.
What is it with people named Rebekah or variations there of?

@ BD: the most high-profile thing to come out of Tens digital team has been their catchup TV player, Tenplay. It’s Ok as these players go – although it really only brings Ten up to speed with 7 and 9, and it does seem quite buggy ( crashes quite a bit). Tens digital video streams have increased quite a bit as a result – but still nowhere near 7 and 9
Are you for real?! Look at the best digital businesses out there – they all pride themselves on being great places to work, develop careers and have almost zero staff churn. Mi9 deal with it by assisting great people if they want to start their own shop. That being said Ten could do with some staff turnover. Unfortunately the best people left or were fired years ago with the remaining quality being largely representative of their position as the 4th placed network (5th if you count Foxtel). It still seems very top heavy as an organisation with most of those in the “executive suite” completely divorced from operational realities of the business, protective of their patches, managing up and devoid of leadership, with the rest of the company being mostly juniors who are trying very hard but really not in the class needed. Perhaps in the next cull they should wipe out the top floor and bring back some of the middle management stars to fix the joint and stop doing business by press release?

Perplexing comments on staff retention.
This is 100% the opposite to our business strategy. Find good people and help them grow and develop. Ideally keep them motivated and learning.
Hey! Are you a young, motivated worker who wants to feel like a part of something bigger? F**k off! 🙂
Love, Ten.
