Regional video streaming demand pushes NBN Co to uncap satellite broadband services

NBN Co is now offering uncapped satellite broadband services to Australians living in regional and rural Australia amid increased demand driven by video streaming and people working and studying from home.

The broadband network provider launched its new Sky Muster Plus Premium service, offering customers unmetered data and speeds of up to 100 Mbps.

“With the rapid growth in data usage, people live their digital lives with more connected devices for remote work, online learning, social media, e-commerce and entertainment. Homes and small businesses in remote areas require access to more data to help cater for their needs,” NBN Co chief development officer for regional and remote Gavin Williams said.

“We are excited to launch nbn Sky Muster Plus Premium as the next step in the natural evolution of the nbn satellite network, offering even more connectivity options for homes and businesses in regional and rural Australia.”

The launch followed a trial by NBN Co involving some 10,700 Sky Muster Plus customers in early 2023, where the company found the network remained ‘robust’ despite the jump in data usage during peak times. NBN Co said improvements in data allowance were also welcomed by the participants.

In a separate announcement, Federal communications minister Michelle Rowland said: “Whether you live in a capital city or in the bush, access to fast, reliable and affordable broadband has never been more important.”

“I’m excited to launch this new Sky Muster product today which will allow thousands of Australians to access unmetered NBN data for the first time in Australia. It’s a game changer for regional communities.

“Across the Sky Muster, fixed wireless and fixed-line networks, the Albanese Government is improving the NBN to give Australians access to 21st century communications infrastructure they need and deserve.”

The service has been enabled by the Federal Government’s $480 million investment to upgrade NBN Fixed Wireless services covering some 120,0000 premises to free up capacity for the satellite-based Sky Muster.

The Government is also spending some $2.4 billion to expand full-fibre NBN service to an additional 1.5 million premises, 660,000 of which will be in regional areas.
