I’m a little unclear.

Do we believe that banning live export from Australia will impact the issue of poor livestock handling overseas?

Will these foreign abbatoirs suddenly close or see the error of their ways because it’s now some other country’s cattle they’re now processing?

What about dealing with the problem, instead of moronic banning and wailing which only hides the problem. These overseas abbatoirs will still receive cattle and treat them in that way.

Australian abbatoirs aren’t exactly where cow’s drink Margraritas and get a pedicure before being serenely euthenased, by the way.

I abhor the cruel treatment, but moronic campaigning will simply salve a few consciences, but do nothing to the root problem.

This is the stupidest campaign I have seen in a while. We arent the only beef exporter in the world..Exactly what do you want to acheive?

All that will happen is another country will supply the beef, nothing will change, and our beef industry will feel the pinch….

I have not been able to sleep properly since seeing and hearing the cry of those poor animals. If I had gone to Indonesia and seen it, I would have tried to kill all those scum responsible for the cruelty.

Julia Gillard is as much a shit as is those responsible for the cruelty carried out on those poor animals. They are good animals giving us milk and meat and are treated in this manner. Gillard will never get a vote from me, my family or friends and anyone else I can persuade not to.

I also believe that Australians should have a greater understanding of where the vacuum packed meat on supermarket shelves’ comes from. As you say, it’s not exactly pedicures on the way the slaughterhouse….

And your facts are wrong. New Zealand does not export live animals to anywhere, though I am sure that if you were there they would make an exception.

The exporters of live animals, and indirectly the farmers have been complicit in this cruelty for many years and only the really stupid ones didn’t see this reaction coming once the facts were exposed.

You say 40,000 animals face slaughter. What do you think they were going to Indonesia for? At least if they are slaughtered here it will be quick.

As a research consultant and strategist in agriculture I can tell you that communities don’t face peril and ruin. There are other markets for their cattle, and the intelligent and able managers of farms will quickly find them and adapt. A few may fall by the wayside, just as Darwin predicts.

You on the other hand will stay a dinosaur.

The point is, those abbatoirs aren’t going to be silent today. The situation hasn’t changed there. There’s no clear plan expressed by the government for remedy. The epitome of political inaction.

I would be impressed to know, with your agri-business knowledge:
– How the cattle that were going to be exported are now going to justify not being culled and wasted?
What are these markets you talk of that require such amounts of live beef at such short notice?

– How are the next season calves going to justify their expense and avoid being culled?
Whilst an unpleasant reality, cows are only bred to die for food and leather. No market means Ermintrude’s calf gets the lead.

Where will the income come from (aside from dole) if the main economic cashflow is stalled?

I’d plan to phase this trade out and redirect the stock to provide ANZ needs, but this needs planning, not knee-jerk banning.

I’m most vexed by the disproportionate attention this old chestnut receives, against the human issues of Malaysian refugees, but I digress.

I grant that NZ does rarely permit the export of live animals, but strictly for breeding.

There are over 2 million cattle slaughtered in Australia each year. The 40000 you are so concerned about are but a small fraction of that, and can be absorbed by the market. They are not high quality meat, that gets sold locally not exported live,, but they are fine for the hamburger chains we know and love, and for the cheaper stewing type cuts.
The idea that they will be culled and wasted is stupid.

The next seasons calves won’t be bred if there is no demand. Those already born are part of the 40000 and no, you can’t count them twice.

Farmers breeding for export won’t go broke, most have crops, other cattle and the intelligence and flexibilty to overcome this setback. Only a city bred fool would fail to give them credit for that.

And, I’m sure we are all sorry if this old chestnut distracts you from the Malaysian refugees ( I didn’t know there were any Malaysian ones but I think I know what you mean) but most of us can deal with more than one issue at a time. Perhaps because we are not one eyed.

New Zealand has made many ethical decisions, this one is not supporting its economy with blood money . These animals are emotional beings like us, and their personalities are as varied. Yes there are people suffering,but now we have the opportunity
to help the animals lets not waste it. The livestock industry is small fry compared with the military , governments and oil barons that are destroying the lives of innocent people. When animals are given the respect all living beings deserve, then the end of cruelty and war must come. The average indonesian earns very little, how can they afford to eat AUSTRALIAN beef ?

Those two million slaughtered cattle aren’t done on the docks of Darwin, are they. In fact there’s no abattoir in Darwin. The nearest is 1000 kms in Tennant Creek, but as an agri-strategist, you obviously know that. You also know that it’s not economically viable to transport and slaughter those cattle in Tennant Creek. They’re dog food at best – an ecological clusterfuck at worst, as unsuitable temporary grazing is sought near Darwin, impacting a small tropical area with the impact of 40,000 ruminants doing what ruminants do.

If the next season’s calves aren’t going to be bred, then Mummy Cow has no need or value. Bye bye mummy cow. As she’s a bit stringy, she’s definitely croc food. But as a fine agri-strategist you know this already don’t you.

I’m not sure which stations you’ve visited in the Top End or indeed anywhere, but they’re called a cattle station because that’s all they (can) do. As an agri-strategist I’m sure you’re aware of Goyder’s line in SA – it doesn’t get better in the Territory. You’re simply making up this amazing ability these farmers will have to turn grazing pasture into a banana crop overnight.

From your delusional grasp of the Australian of the agricultural situation, I surmise that your agricultural strategies are more of which variety of carrot to plant in your city-bred-fool vegetable patch.

AdGunt in the course of conducting fieldwork for research for clients I have visited many of the cattle stations in FNQ and NT, probably most of the significant ones. My knowledge here is a result of direct experience as well as a lifetime of family farming on a large scale. in NSW , Qld, Tas and NZ.

Sending cattle back to Tennant Creek is easy – and is done often. Few stations breed exclusively for live export and the loss of the entire live export trade would not be catostrophic.The current hand wringing is about maximising compensation and will only fool people like you. You will find that already many of the cattle you are so concerned about already have new buyers and will turn up in fast food before you know it. But even if they turn up in dog food they are not wasted.

It is easy to skip a generation of calves, you just don’t inseminate them.

I’m not sure whether you are really really stupid, or whether you just choose to misunderstand my last post, and most others that you respond to.

In this instance you are well out of you depth, and you won’t get back into it by posing obscure arguments interspersed with snippets of the latin you recall. The fact that you use it at all reveals more than just a knowledge of fallacies.

– You haven’t explained this miraculous way these pastoralists will change production from livestock to their new mysterious income. As you’ve apparently been to most of these stations, I look forward to hearing your vision. “She’ll be alright” is not a strategy.

– “Few stations” seems at odds with the 65% of Northern beef grazing land that is used solely for live export stock? But you knew that didn’t you?

– Sown crops in the same area? – 0.0001% – that’s a big turnaround you’re talking about. But you knew that didn’t you?

– Skipping a season is feasible, but if you ain’t producing, you’re a burden, so the majority of the breeder stock is excess and about to be dog food. Not exactly a good result for a farmer that was hoping to be seeing production from those cows.

– You haven’t explained where / who is paying for these cattle to fatten. These are export-ready Brahmans which are therefore underweight weaners (so your burger suggestion reveals your scant knowledge of livestock and slaughter)

– Not sure what those cows are going to do in Tennant Creek. No usable grazing and the abattoir does about 20 head / week. Better to send them to QLD for 6 months and hope the market doesn’t notice and plunge the price then. The cows will love another spin back and forth across the top end in a Road Train, too. It’s their favourite thing, don’t you know?

– You seem to believe that such a massive impact on a finely balanced protein production economy is inconsequential. Is it more the “what’s for breakfast” than the”what’s the 5-year plan” that you’ve been involved in?

– Do tell more of these strategies and less of how you’re a strategist, you’d come off as more credible. So far it amounts to “she’ll be alright” – I presume you don’t live in NT any more.

– Latin isn’t what I recall – it’s what fallacies are called every day – the West Wing even named an episode after your favourite fallacy. And Australia was named after the latin Australis, meaning southern. But you knew that, didn’t you?

AdGunt I will not enter into one of your endless ponderous debates where you blather on about side issues to disguise the fact that you have no contribution to make to the central issue.

If you had any knowledge or intgrity with statistics you wouldn’t say 65% of NT land is used for live export stock you would deal in stock numbers because you would know that the carrying capacity of the NT is very low. In fact many of the live export cattle are trucked to the NT from the south and held there for export.

Your argument here is like your argument on behalf of the tobacco companies you know and love – half arsed and relying on half truths and misquoted statistics.

NT pastoral carrying capacity is very low isn’t it. Because it’s so infertile and no other crop would grow there? Hence the myth of your suggesting other rural production will take up the economic slack. I thought you did agri-strategy?

Export stock (from southern properties) are indeed trucked South, but not via Darwin first. Are you really now suggesting they get sent to Fremantle or Melbourne after being schlepped to Darwin? You really do care for the animals, don’t you.

I’m still not clear on what you suggest happen to these stranded cattle. A suggestion based in reality would be good.

Mine is: Lift ban. Put cattle on a ship to one of the (numerous) Australian-standard abattoirs in Indonesia and have a cohesive plan for supporting Indo to improve non-compliant abattoir standards.

I was at the Brisbane rally today for Banning of live exports. After attending this rally, it got me even more angry over this horrendous export.
So many people there thought the same as me, that even if they make the stun gun mandatory that still doesnt mean they will use it.. Indonesia cannot be trusted, even if the gun is used, the cattle and sheep will still get punched, kicked, tails broken and god only knows what else they will think up to do to these poor defenseless creatures… these animals are giving up their own lives for these people, and they treat them like that?? I will never visit Indonesia ever, and if i did i probably would get arrested for giving one of those goddamn creeps a good smack in the mouth…
banning of all live export is the ONLY way to go.. we will accept nothing else..

You seem to assume that the stun gun is preferable to the halal / kosher method. You might want to do a bit of research into that.
You might also want to learn to write so that you don’t sound like an angsty teenager.

AdGunt don’t be a prat. Exporting live cattle & sheep is going the way of many other barbaric practices as we humans become more enlightened. Smoking is another example. And the people who earn their livelihoods from them will find something else to do just like blacksmiths, buggy whip makers and so on did. Change is tough, evolution is tough, but the fittest will survive.
It is nice that you keep your finger in the dike but watch for the water coming over the top.

My family has quite a few Commonwealth Meat Inspectors in it and I am very wise to everything that happens in Australian abattoirs, thank you very much.

I think Sabrina makes a very valid point.

When I go to the supermarket, I often envision that the meat was once my spouse and children. It helps me keep a perspective on the reality of livestock agriculture. It also helps to explain to my wife why she lives in a field, has a ring through her nose and her sole purpose on this earth is to provide me with meat, milk, calves and leather.

Similarly, when I invite my porcine and bovine friends over for a human roast of a weekend, we often like to discuss the matters of the day. They’re messy eaters as they only have hooves. The conversation is also a bit stilted as they have absolutely no concept of anything except mooing, eating and shitting, with a bit of rutting thrown in for good measure. But they’re my friends and they love me, so I put up with it.

Aside from that, nothing else matters as I love cows and they are the same as humans. And puppies. And whales.

I do draw the line at spiders, as they’re crawly and I squash them. And mice. And rats. Basically, as long as it’s big, furry and has cute eyes, I like it. If not, it doesn’t count. BASTARDS!

Each time I read or see images regarding the live export trade it brings tears to my eyes. This evening on the ‘banliveexport’ website I watched the story of Brian one of the steers in the Four Corners story, within 30 sec I was crying out loud. I couldn’t watch the stories of the other animals Tommy, Arthur, Dudley and Bill, to see what they were subjected to would be to heartwrenching for me.

I like many others have written to our PM and the Minister for Agriculture demanding that the live export trade be halted. I encourage others to watch the story of Brian, Tommy, Arthur, Dudley or Bill and to write to the PM and the Minister for Agriculture demanding the same thing.

These beef cattle have names? All 40,000 of them.

That makes me think of them as tasty pets.

Nobody helped me in this decision; I face constant bullying at my school every day; but do you know what? I haven’t backed down. When I saw this video, and the others, it brought tears to my eyes and made me feel physically nauseated.

I agree that the immediate ban Julia Gillard enforced of live cattle export was pretty stupid; but only because now, I know that those cows are going to suffer hunger and horrible conditions, pointless deaths, and the farmers will have a lot of hard work in front of them. Call me naive, but I just don’t agree with this. I would much prefer that she took a bit of brains spending some time on a decision good for everybody.

Regardless, if I had it my way, animal slaughter would be banned entirely.
