http://youtu.be/Y2Y8DEvrVz4
In this episode of The Mumbo Report, author and columnist Sam de Brito talks about:
- His book Hello Darkness and its negative portrayal of the world of journalism;
- Training as a tabloid journalist, “I’ve done some pretty dodgy things.”
- How he probably wouldn’t be here if he couldn’t write.

Love Sam de Brito, he is so real and deeply open and honest.
Take Sam de Brito out of Australian media and who have you got to replace him? No one. There is simply no one in this country who is as honest, open and raw. It’s too bad that people don’t get how valuable he is.
@ Goobs… in all truth I could pick 1000 more interesting, more entertaining writers. Maybe it’s me but I find De Brito’s faux, PC, Eastern suburbs, pathos-dripping view of manhood all a bit nauseating (but I’m sure the girls love his delicateness.) Best of luck to him, of course, but please SMH.com it’s desperately, desperately time for some new ‘blood’ on the site. And while you’re there, take that Sam In The City woman with you (to write the same ‘why men won’t commit’ column for eight years is well past tired.)
“I trained in the Murdoch empire and I think it’s probably the best training ground for journalists in the world … it’s made me who I am and what I am.” Not sure those two statements quite gel.
But seriously, he has his fans, he has his haters, but the guy is good at what he does. And he shouldn’t be compared to Sam Brett. De Brito at least puts some thought into his pieces, and can string a sentence together.
@ Jeff… I never meant to infer De Brito was not good as what he does nor was of similar calibre of The Sex Woman. Rather I was merely hypothesising that some new, fresh writers at SMH.com could enthuse new life into an otherwise tired format.
Sam is fab and his fairfax blog is, I really believe, one of the very best of its type. I do worry about his state of mind right now though – his marriage/partnership breakup seems to have hit hard. Take care Sam!
And I agree with Jeff and Dave re Sam Brett – her overly simplistic columns consist of positing a couple of tired ides and then saying “Now what do you think?”. Very old and very tired, and there is far better talent out there.
I want Sam inside me now!
Sam de Brito’s blog is excellent. Brave, truthful, sometimes vulgar and gauche but combined with insight and intelligence it is real life and not by the numbers journalism.
So Dave, I’m interested to know the “1000 more interesting, more entertaining writers”… Who are they??
goobs, i believe CityKat is the female version of Sam…so to your answer if you take Sam DeBrito out, you will still have cityKat. I think there are some very good writers in Australia.
