Thursday October 6, 2011 –
Microsoft today announced that two new Australian television partners will be coming to the Xbox LIVE service with ABC iview and SBS ON DEMAND.
Apple don’t make consoles, but if they did – they’d be the Xbox360.
It’s a media hub for the home, it streams from wherever, it has fuss free software.
Oh, and it plays games.
Well played Microsoft – and all on a console that’s 5 years old, and expected to carry on until 2015.
Apple play by a different play book to Microsoft. Apple look for opportunities in a marketplace, and create a market where there was none before. I don’t thin they can take over an existing market like Microsoft have with the xbox.
Bill gates wanted the living room to connect to the world. Media center PCs failed to do it. Thanks to Sony though, who showed that a games console was the way to do it. xbox launched in a hurry, and at great expense. Xbox live was born a year from launch (also in a hurry) following apples marketplace strategy for online purchases using a credit card connected to a device, the xbox live marketplace was born. And like iOS marketplace, it has grown from strength to strength as the years go by.
Microsoft have outmuscled Sony to win the battle for living rooms in America. And are now trying to outmuscle apple from the mobile space. A market that apple created from nothing (the mobile market as we know it today was non existent before iPhone came out) Microsoft is now using it’s omniscient OS and games marketplace to get phones into peoples pockets. Microsofts three screens mantra is almost complete with a presence in the mobile space on the horizon.
Th console might be 5 years old, but the software is cutting edge. Instant media streaming of high def movies, subscription tv, games on demand…and soon to be skype, YouTube and mobile browsing hopefully….
