Setanta to show Euro 2012 in Australia
Subscription sports channel Setanta has announced that it has the exclusive live Australian rights to the group matches in next year’s Euro 2012 soccer tournament.
The football championship, which takes place every four years, includes national teams such as Spain, England, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Greece and France.
Setanta is not included under the standard Foxtel and Austar sports subscriptions, meaning that Setanta will treat the event as a major opportunity to bring in new Australian subscribers.
The tournament, being held in Poland and Ukraine, runs from June to July next year, shortly before the London Olympics.

A new way to bring in Australian subscribers??? “Football fans” are loyal to “football” and will not necessarily be loyal to Sentanta after the tournament is over. In fact, I expect they will be pissed off they have to pay additional fees on top of monthly Foxtel fees to watch this event. Having watched several games on Sentanta I also think they will be pissed off with sub standard commentary and presenters.
And in Australia we call it soccer … so they are soccer fans.
At least the commentators should know what they are talking about.

YOU may call it football, but to the majority of Australians the term “football” primarily means either Rugby League or Australian Rules. To others it may also mean Rugby Union or Association Football (which the majority of Australians call soccer).
Languages are fluid, living and growing entities, especially when they cross geographical, national and ethnic boundaries, as well as across time.
You only need to look through any newspaper, TV or radio sportscasts for evidence. Though I suppose in your belief that the Australian majority are wrong.

I signed up for this package for Euro2008. The coverage was absolutely appalling. Of all the bad things, the worst was Setanta broadcasting the matches in extremely low quality: worse than SD on the FTA channels. When the ball is kicked long, you get that terrible comet effect, where it appears to have a tale. I’ll be bypassing Setanta and streaming the games from HD broadcasters overseas.
I’ll be very interested to see if they have short term subscription packages, shame no other network come in for the tournament but should imagine the majority of bars in the CBD’s who currently have Setanta will be more than happy
