Seven grabs The Voice from Nine
Seven has announced The Voice Australia for its 2021 content slate, after nine seasons of the show on rival network Nine.
The 2021 season of the format will be hosted by Sonia Kruger who moved to Seven in 2019. CEO James Warburton referred to the addition as a ‘coup’, but Nine wasn’t so complimentary when approached for comment.
“Unfortunately due to the age of the show and declining demographic profile, The Voice had become by far the poorest financial performer on our slate. We wish 7 well in their quest to revive yet another Nine show,” said a Nine spokesperson.
It’s hard to imagine Seven reinvigorating this format with a tighter budget. I think audiences are simply fatigued with the brand, as reflected in this years poor ratings. It’s a tough pill to swallow for Renee Barge who moved countries to Australia for this job.
Old mariners thought it bad luck to sail on a ship that had been renamed. The name remains with The Voice, but the bad luck may just be lurking in the passe nature of the show.
It may be that there are now too many similar candles blazing for the rating moths.
How is it strategic for 7 to base their entire programming slate on rehashing tired old formats from other networks? I understand it’s hard to get new formats up and running, but surely nows the time for a complete reset whilst James has a window. This is more of a win for ITV than it is for 7
James when he took over bagged 7s programming under former management as tired and predictable. In 1 year rattle off the fallen programs that didn’t rate and how many shows hav 7 taken from others. Now the voice? You can only go to the well a number of times, hope he was got that number right.
