Seven looks to 2020, but quiet on more immediate issues
Yesterday and today Seven West Media has been unveiling its plans for 2015 to media buyers and journalists. However amongst the glitz and glamour questions around regenerating formats, fast-tracking, streaming and HD broadcasts remain unanswered, writes Alex Hayes.
Seven West Media’s upfronts always take some beating, if there’s one thing the company knows how to do it’s put on a show. Today the sell was all about the ‘Destination 20/20’, keeping the network at number one for the next five years. And while there was plenty of good stuff, it struck me none of the executives addressed some of the major issues facing all TV networks in the next couple of years.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel for our main TV stations.
Unfortunately for them, it’s a large train streaming in their direction and is going to make an awful mess of them all when it arrives.
Great upfronts, lots of good opportunities, a media owner who wants to pull ahead which can only be good for clients.
It’s a Broken Model. Why can’t they just bury the horse and buy a car!
does that sign say “Piracy Proof” or “Idiot Proof” ?
how completely uninspiring. I’m so excited for the death of free to air.
There is really only rubbish on TV at the moment and into the future. Home and away is a double yuck and networks line up more rubbish’s like Wonderland and stupid chat shows and reruns of everything.
@ James A broken model which still generates $1b in revenue every year. Yep, I’d close that business down.
“Piracy Proof” – content that no one downloads!
The ABC are the only network creating quality watchable content, while being raped by the Govt. The commercial networks have contempt for their audiences. It’s no wonder that piracy is so big in Australia. Why is it the dumbest people are always in charge?
WOW! Lots of razzle dazzle, a helicopter, c grade celebs and themed rooms… I’m in! What’s on? Oh right, Dancing with the Stars (grabs iPad, watches 400 free movies on SBS on Demand.)
TARPs for Dayz
FTA will die but not from Netflix or Piracy. The MEDIA BUYING GROUPS will kill FTA as they push unwary advertisers marketing dollars into programmatic digital media to extract the huge margins they demand.
If SWM were smart they would be razzling and dazzling their direct advertisers and educating them out of their ad-agency induced state of blind faith. Poor suckers.
The Seven Network Should make 7mate go for Younger Viewers in 2015 and Launch a Sunday Night Line-Up of Hit Sitcoms from the USA, that way the Main Channel would focus on those 35 and Over and continue airing Dramas, Lifestyle, Reality and News during Primetime.
