Seven major Australian publishers sign exclusive content deals with Facebook
Just weeks after the ACCC’s Digital Platform Inquiry final report recommended Facebook begins to address the damage it’s done to journalism in Australia by investing back into media companies, the social media giant has announced several key partnership deals with major publishers.
Broadcasters including Nine, Seven, SBS, Ten and Sky News have all signed agreements to provide content to Facebook, including the announcement of several original news shows exclusively for Facebook Watch.
So they are now getting into bed with the cat that takes all the cream….
Well done
They just never learn do they?
Short term gain for long term oblivion.
Just to state the obvious, it’s all upside for Facebook: news content from trusted sources, plus they get to say they’re supporting local content creators. But I don’t know whether to laugh or cry watching Australian media publishers, rushing blithely head first toward the guillotine, having learnt from their mistakes proving they can repeat them exactly.
This makes the broadcasting industry look hypocritical at best and clueless at worst
Oh look! The turkeys are voting for thanksgiving!!
I note that the Guardian and the Oz are not participating – and as far as I can tell they’re the only news publishers that are hiring more journalists.
I watched the media completely stuff it 25 years ago and here they go again. Why on earth can’t the traditional media get a handle on digital. Clueless doesn’t begin to describe it.
