Seven wins largest audience while cricket remains most popular sport for television

Seven has won its ninth consecutive night with the help of the Australian Open, despite the popularity of the cricket, which continues to be a favourite on Australian television.

The Perth Scorchers defeated the Melbourne Stars last night, finishing on a seven wicket win as they secured their spot in the Big Bash final for the fifth year. The match managed an average audience of 850,000 viewers with Melbourne pulling the largest audience of 314,000.

The semi-final was the most watched non-news program for the evening and the most watched across the key advertising demographics of 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54, according to OzTAMs overnight preliminary metro ratings.

Despite Roger Federer triumphing over Mischa Zverev in straight sets to make the semi-finals, the tennis achieved 828,000 viewers, not drawing an audience large enough to defeat the cricket.

Seven won Tuesday night ratings with an average audience share of 21.6%, with Seven News its most watched program at 954,000, ahead of the tennis.

Nine finished at 15.9%, with Nine News the channel’s only program to crack the million mark, reaching 1.034m viewers. A Current Affair drew 843,000 ahead of Hot Seat’s 607,000 and Animals Unexpected at 489,000.

Ten beat ABC for third position for the first time this week, at 16.8% share. Trailing the cricket, The Project managed 509,000 viewers while Ten Eyewitness News attracted 497,000. Family Feud managed to make the top 20 for the night seeing 378,000 viewers tune in for the game show.
