Sharyn Ghidella announces next move after Seven Network departure
Only weeks after announcing her shock departure from the Seven Network, beloved TV news presenter Sharyn Ghidella has announced her next move.
On Thursday afternoon, it was confirmed that Ghidella will return to Network 10 as presenter of Queensland’s 10 News First.
Ghidella first worked at Network 10 in 1990 before moving to Nine in 1992 and eventually Seven in 2007 as a presenter for Weekend Sunrise, before moving to Today Tonight. Then, she took up the newsreader role at 7NEWS Brisbane in 2013, alongside Max Futcher.
“Returning to 10 News First feels like coming home. Network 10 provided me my first opportunity to work in a metropolitan newsroom and I have nothing but fond memories of my time there in the early 90s,” Ghidella said.
“To be returning to present a new local news service, with even more content relevant to Queenslanders, represents an exciting opportunity for me.
“Viewers recently have been very vocal about what they want in a news service, and 10 News First is tailoring its new local bulletin to meet those viewer needs.
“10 News First has long been committed to keeping its audience informed about the issues and events that matter to them, both at home and overseas, and I can’t wait to join this dedicated and highly professional team in the Queensland newsroom.”
It comes after Ghidella announced her axing from Seven in July in a Facebook post saying: “It wasn’t quite how I expected it to end at Channel 7. I was actually sitting at the hairdressers for work, when I got the call informing me, that after 17 years with the network, my time was up.”
Referring to reports that Seven West Media’s editor-in-chief Anthony De Ceglie is looking to revamp the network’s evening news bulletin with an astrologer, and the newly-announced satirical segment hosted by Mark Humphries, Ghidella wrote: “I’m also not one to have my evening news served up with humour and horoscopes either, so, to be honest, it is time to go.”
Ghidella will take over 10 News First from Sandra Sully in September. Network 10 has confirmed that the change will simply mean Sully stays on as Sydney’s newsreader but will no longer read news for Queensland.
“I’ve known Sharyn for many years, and I’m thrilled to be handing the Brisbane bulletin over to another Queenslander,” Sully said.
“It’s wonderful to have our local news in such good hands, and I’m delighted to welcome Sharyn home to 10. I can’t wait to see the great things she and our local Queensland team will do together.”
Martin White, Head of Broadcast News, Paramount Australia and New Zealand, added: “This is a great day for 10 in Queensland. We’re firm believers in local journalism and giving our audiences the best possible content – which aligns perfectly with Sharyn, Brisbane’s number one newsreader.
“We’re thrilled to welcome her back to 10 and can’t wait to get started.”
