Spotlight doubles takings after Best Picture Oscar as Lady in the Van opens strongly

Spotlight, the winner of the Best Picture gong at last Monday’s Oscars saw its box office takings double on the previous weekend, while British film The Lady in the Van enjoyed a strong opening weekend.

The new release, based on a biographical play by Alan Bennett about an eccentric woman who lived in a van on his driveway for 15 years, took $2.077m on its opening weekend on 266 screens.

It still could not touch Marvel Comics’ Deadpool, which took $2.5m on 407 screens to stay at the top of the box office – with takings now topping $37m.
