Stan adds Disney and Marvel to streaming service
Streaming service Stan has inked a deal with the Walt Disney Company that will see shows including the Marvel and Star Wars movies appearing on the Nine-owned platform.
The programs will start appearing on the service from December 14 as part of the existing subscriber package.
This is huge. Christmas holidays sorted!
Interesting – I guess Disney won’t be launching their streaming service in Australia any time soon then. That’s why Netflix lost the international distribution rights after all.
Nobody knows what the terms of the contract are, it may not be exclusive, allowing Disney+ to launch here with some or all of the same content plus their own upcoming exclusive content.
This wouldn’t make sense for Disney. They have been systematically removing their content from other streaming services globally.
The most likely reason for this is that they aren’t launching their streaming service in AUS for a year or more, at which point Stan will lose all of it.
Disney’s streaming service won’t be launching anywhere globally until late 2019 with the United States being the first, so I wouldn’t expect Disney+ in Australia until 2020.
There’s a bigger chance of Hulu launching locally mid-late 2019 as they have global intentions for that service as well.
It is non-exclusive.
Disney’s content is all over Foxtel NOW.
I think David is correct – DISNEY is selling for the next year and then will remove for their own service. They’ve been removing from NETFLIX as their the global leader – smaller fry like STAN etc help with short term cash but aren’t seen as long term competitors.
In many ways, this is a backhanded compliment. Disney has plans to become a serious rival to Netflix and Amazon with its new streaming service – and with Star Wars, Disney, Pixar, Marvel and soon Fox etc they should hurt them – but the company clearly considers Stan a bit of a joke. (The normal logic would be to pull Disney content for a bit so people can miss it, but they’d rather take the cash safe in the knowledge Stan are a nobody on the global stage.)
Considering that Disney’s content has been steadily pulled from Netflix’s ANZ service, over the last year since the announcement of their streaming service, there already is a thirst for their content.
It’s a massive win for Stan because the groundswell of new consumers and returning viewers will be massive.
The content is everywhere on Foxtel NOW – so STAN is in now way an exclusive home.
Hi The Truth, you are correct and we’ve added a line clarifying the deal is not exclusive to Stan with Foxtel already having a number of Disney offerings.
