Stan Sport adds Laver Cup tennis tournament featuring Nick Kyrgios

Nine-owned Stan Sport has landed the rights to more tennis, signing on to broadcast the fourth edition of the Laver Cup, which sees six superstars from Europe take on six from the rest of the world.

Team World will be aiming to win the Laver Cup for the first time, and Aussie maverick Nick Kyrgios will be competing, with John McEnroe on board as team captain.

The competition will be broadcast exclusive and ad-free on Stan Sport from 25 September, after Stan signed a multi-year agreement for the tournament.

The coverage will include twelve matches, with three singles and one doubles match played each day, taking place at TD Garden in Boston.

Confirmed alongside Kyrgios for Team World are Canada’s Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime, Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman, and USA’s John Isner and Reilly Opelka.

They’ll face up against Team Europe, which will feature Russia’s Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev, Greece’s Stefanos Tsitspas, Germany’s Alexander Zverev, Italy’s Matteo Berrettini and Norway’s Casper Ruud, captained by Bjorn Borg.

Stan acting CEO, Martin Kugeler, said: “The Laver Cup has become one of the most thrilling tennis competitions on the annual calendar. We are pleased to welcome this innovative tennis tournament featuring some of the world’s best players and iconic captains John McEnroe and Björn Borg as our newest live sports event to Stan later this month.

“We had a terrific response to our Wimbledon and Roland Garros coverage earlier this year and look forward to bringing tennis fans the Laver Cup on Stan Sport.”

Kyrgios said: “The Laver Cup is my favourite week of the year and I just love being part of the team. It’s going to be unreal playing at TD Garden, home of the Celtics. Boston fans love their sport, so if we can win the Laver Cup anywhere, then TD Garden and Boston, one of the greatest sports cities in the world is the place to do it.”

Laver Cup CEO, Steve Zacks, added: “The Laver Cup is named to honour Australian tennis icon Rod Laver. It is fitting and necessary that his home nation can follow all the action from Boston live on Stan Sport.

“Bringing together rivals as teammates is just one of the unique elements of The Laver Cup that has captivated fans around the world. We look forward to another spectacular weekend of competition.”

Nine will also broadcast the Australian Open again in 2022, launching its coverage at a virtual event recently, promising brands ‘huge audiences’ and ‘unrivalled storytelling’ at the forthcoming tournament.

Nine and Stan also have the rights to Wimbledon and Rolland Garoos, having signed a three-year deal to for both slams last November.

Stan Sport is available for an additional $10 on top of a regular Stan subscription.

Meanwhile, Stan has announced that season two of its original series RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under will return to screens in 2022. The series will be going into production soon, with additional judges and special celebrity guests to be announced at a later date.

Stan chief content officer, Cailah Scobie, said: “Aussie fans loved the Stan Original Series RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under and demanded a second season.

“As the most awarded reality competition show in TV history, the decision was an easy one, and we can’t wait to see the incredible talent that the show will unveil after the high bar set by season one.”

The program is a World of Wonder production in collaboration with Warner Bros. International Production New Zealand for Stan and TVNZ.
