Stardeals finally becomes Groupon after winning battle for Aussie domain
Eight months after accusing rival site Scoop On of “domain squatting”, Star Deals has got its hands on the groupon.com.au url and rebranded to match its international positioning.
Groupon today issued a statement saying: “The Stardeals brand will be discontinued, with all traffic redirected to groupon.com.au. Groupon Australia today offers deals in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, with premium deals also being offered in Melbourne and Sydney.”
At the time of posting, the company was considering whether to respond to Mumbrella’s question about how it wrested the domain from Scoopon.
These guys are so far behind the 8 ball, they need to look into Deal Peel
@Anonymous… I would say “Deal Peel” – as an unlaunched website – are behind the 8 ball.
I wonder if they bought the domain name, or got the AUDA to release it back to them?
Hold on. What am I thinking? The AUDA don’t worry about domain squatting or trademark infringement….how silly of me…
Can’t wait for Deal Peel to launch.
I’ve only got:
2 more waxings
1 Thai meal in the middle of nowhere
1 colonic irrigation
1 jet boat ride
and
1 package of xxxx at $100, normal cost $200 (in your dreams it ever costs this)
I wonder if Groupon paid something for it? If they had a registered Groupon business name in Australia there would have been legal grounds to take the domain even with Trade Mark infringements especially since the domain was not being used and could have been charged with cyber-squatting. There use to be a way to create problems for trade mark owners with a hole in our legal system through a registered business name. Maybe this legal hole had been patched now? I am currently also promoting Groupon deals via affiliation while partially in stealth mode still coding my unique take on the Price Comparison market with HAGOOLE.com.au (haggle).
Seems silly to discontinue the Stardeals branding after all of that.
