We still want to consume news – but tastes are changing
In this crossposting from The Conversation, QUT’s Stephen Harrington argues traditional media needs to look more closely at young consumers.
Earlier this year, the ABC’s managing director Mark Scott announced Australia’s public broadcaster would begin a search “to find creative ways to deliver news to children and teenagers”.
In the announcement, Scott rightly commented that:
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (and sometimes John Oliver) is the best place to get any international news. Especially their regular segments on the idiocy, hypocrisy and incompetence of “real news” basketcases Fox and CNN.
You forgot that we all now expect news we can comment on and voice our opinion on, corrections on, or discuss. This is Web 2.0 at it’s core. Unfortunately lots of tabloidish news sites like news.com.au and it’s ancillery sites now turn comments off on EVERY article.
