The subs strike back

The strike by Fairfax Media journalists didn’t take long to make itself felt on the front page of today’s Sydney Morning Herald which went to press with a howler on the front page headline.
Today’s edition of the SMH features the headline: “Household debt a threat to ecomomy”.
Sydney Morning Herald and The Age journalists went on strike on Wednesday for seven days in response to an announcement that 125 full-time jobs are facing the chopping block.
Who says you don’t need subs or a well resourced editorial team?
The SMH must survive.
I’m 71 and read it virtually every day of my life since she 8.
Fuck – the slrike is even affecting subbimg of the comments.
Steady on everyone. Everyone is entitled to a view. Even if you disagree.
This is how they strike back! Fighting the powers that be with spelling mistakes. .. front page. .. ha ha ha. So much thuggery goin on up in there.
Sad state of affairs… though to be honest there is almost always an equally bad subbing error in the website anyway.
But Australia needs the SMH and The Age, we need balance. They need to find a sustainable model very very soon.
At least 20 staff from AFR’s Sydney office are on strike plus many in Melbourne. It is one house committee.
Ironic that in reporting this Mumbrella misquotes the headline.
“Household debt a threat to the ecomomy”
No ‘the’ in the headline. 🙂
Hi Z-dawg,
You’re right, we did misquote the headline – I’ve fixed that now, thanks for the heads-up.
Cheers,
Miranda – Mumbrella
Yeah no.
Sub-editing was outsourced to a New Zealand company last year….
