Sum ting wong with this broadcast
It’s quite hard to commit an error so disastrous that your television station’s news credibility may never fully recover.
Which makes this broadcast purporting to name the pilots of the crashed Asiana Airlines plane, by KTVU Channel 2 in the US, something of an achievement.
This reminds me of the Nine Network’s ‘Today’ show stuff-up when Ben Fordham read out a message from a viewer named Diego, which turned out to be a naughty word in Portuguese, and Karl Stefanovic claiming Brazilians speak Italian. This is the level of ignorance from journalists we are expose to when watching these sort of programmes that claim to be sources of news and information.
While it’s claimed the NTSB issued these names I can’t help but wonder whether someone at the station knew the names were bogus and ‘Anchorman’ style decided to put it to air anyway.
Does it really take that much of an effort for news readers to think before they read???

Actually, a well worded and read apology. rarely do news organisations actually recognize and acknowledge their errors, i would love to have seen how this would have been handled in Australia…and if it had occurred in print?
Given that they did check with the authorities, this was (imo) an unfortunate event and a good opportunity to learn.
All presenters whether on Radio or TV are taught to pre-read (preferably out loud) their scripts.Perhaps it is different in the US.
Some regional stations used to set a trap for the unwary presenter and invariably they pre read everything from then on.
who was this Summer Intern? Surprised they didn’t try to take the heat off themselves and hunt him down current affair stylie…. (and make the story about a smart ar$e douchbag who thought something like that was funny… :P)
