Sunday Tele outs The Australian’s journo as part of Young Liberals ‘cover-up’ over Alan Jones row
The Sunday Telegraph has taken the unusual step of outing a journalist on sister newspaper The Australian as what it claims is the source of misleading information over the Alan Jones saga.
The Sunday Tele’s move followed an attempt by critics to claim that the paper breached etiquette when it broke the story last week of Alan Jones’ comments about Julia Gillard’s father having died of shame.
The newspaper argues that there was no obligation to keep the comments secret, and that the transcript reveals that no such request was made to the audience despite claims to the contrary in Fairfax Media’s Sydney Morning Herald.
Today’s Sunday Tele reports:
“On the basis of one unsourced comment from a young man more anxious to stem the embarrassment his Liberal club had caused its hero Alan Jones”
Seems about as much evidence as David Marr’s piece regarding the punching incident.
I’ve also read the proof of the “cover-up”, my understanding is that this “proof” comprises a recording of Berger’s speech and Jones’ speech. Neither of which asked for confidentiality. Unfortunately, Nadin’s testimony was that the requests for journalists to identify themselves happened earlier in proceedings.
Tony Jones – we’ll take that as a comment! What sort of question is that from a would be journo?
So we have the unethical Kiwi writing the story and the unethical young Lib spinning it at an inhouse rival? And the subject is Alan Jones.
So crazy people might think we’ve an issue within our media?????
So the best the Tele can do here is to trot out the hoary old Fairfax vs Murdoch set-piece battle, and even to cap it off with a “deeply unethical” accusation.
Hello? anyone home there?
Is it any wonder there’s such a deep cynicism abroad in the land of Oz these days?
