Sydney philanthropist Judith Neilson launches $100m journalism fund
Australian philanthropist Judith Neilson has announced a fund commitment of at least $100 million to create a world-leading journalism institute based in Sydney.
The Judith Neilson Institute for Journalism and Ideas will aim to celebrate and encourage quality journalism in Australia and the world through education and grants and by hosting lively events on the big issues of the day.
Neilson, who is also behind Sydney’s White Rabbit Gallery, will be patron of the institute, but play no direct role in its management or programs.

Wow. Huge news! Where are all the comments? If they can get these resources to students and grads outside of Sydney this could be game-changing in terms of career sustainability.
Bloody marvellous – brava to you, Ms Neilson.
What a gift. A truly visionary philanthropist.
Marvellous news. Thank you, Judith. Journalism has certainly taken some bad hits in the last few years and I was beginning to despair that all news was to become trivialised infotainment and all discussion discouraged or dissolve into slanging matches – which the present media seems to prefer as being ‘hard-hitting’. Looking forward to some good investigative journalism.
Inspiring and needed. Hope it is named in honor of Julian Assange and other journalist warriors.
