Sydney radio ratings: Jones and 2GB take a hit

Very long survey period, so I think we need to await next survey before making and detailed analysis, so a trend can be ascertained

Stand alone survey….. hence relevant. It would be naive to think that Jones’ and Hadley’s behaviour have not had an effect. The listening audience is now starting to react (outside of a rolling survey). You reap what you sew.

Yes james, maybe this will continue, and real radio will come back, after a long hiatus. Ray Hadley is a footy commentator, and Jones an ex footy coach. They are not experts, even if they deilver false info with passion.

Hi GetReal, its not a standalone survey. CRA has changed the survey timetable so this is also a rolling survey as is the rest of the year. As I understand it, the survey period is Oct 28-Dec 1 and Jan 20-Feb 23 therefore this survey release partly reflects listening that was reported in Survey 8 2012. New on-air presenters in that sense only reflect half the sample. You’ll need to wait until Survey 2 to see true 2013 trends. In previous years Survey 1 was made up of a double sample and hence a standalone – this is no longer the case.

Maybe this is a sign of the times that Shock Jocks are on their way out.

Both of Yumi and Sami’s listeners have been quoted as saying they enjoy the Mix106.5 breakfast show and are sticking with it for Survey 2.

They are looking forward to tomorrow morning’s discussion as to “whether shaving down there can save a relationship” and “is a threesome OK if both boys are cute”.

Meanwhile – news of Alan’s death is premature. He has not died of shame over these survey results and is planning a comeback in Survey 2.

Mediaman why would you come up with a name like that. Feeling left out and you seem to love picking on people.

I don’t think these figures have anything to do directly with the person behind the microphone. This seems to me like a case of the non 2GB audience not failing to keep up with the Jones’, but rather surpassing them and proceeding apace.

This may be a rather exciting case of Audience Power, over Lord God Jock Power.

This is just a thought, I am only an observer you understand.

Hi Alan, i dont actually know what you mean by your ‘objective’ comments. I am also not sure just how much longer I can continue to listen to these winging wannabee radio stars, sitting in cushy air cond studios claiming that they ‘know it all’, when they have backgrounds in sport related fields. This is ‘entertainment’ and listeners hould not confuse what they do with ‘current affairs’. The ABC can always help anyone who wants to know the ‘real’ facts, if you just want to ‘whinge’ there is AJ and RH.

The AM stations all seem to do poorly the first survey of the year, and the ABC gains (with some cricket effect). Wait until the next survey to judge 2GB but I am sure they will recover

Here’s a bit more: Paul Murray will emerge as one of the biggest stars on radio over the next year or so, provided Fairfax, if they still own the radio stations, stick with him and promote him.

Which reminds me, why don’t we see more cross promotion of Fairfax’s radio and newspaper interests – some paper shuffling and contra deals would help print and radio in the market place.

Surely 2GB’s plunge in the ratings means that business in the past 3 months has been very, very good at Rookwood Cemetary?

I’d put money on Jones and Hadley bouncing back. Their audiences love them.

Over at 2UE I give Dicko and his side kick 12 months. They are likeable but very ordinary, with no feel for radio. Christ knows why they punted Jason Morrison from that timeslot. At least he was mildly competitive against Jones.

On 2UE I note that Paul Murray’s new show from the SMH offices has seen a slide. And he never got a huge following in Drive. If he doesn’t show any growth in his new slot over this year you’d have to start asking questions wouldn’t you? Generally, the sound of the station is a bit all over the place – gossip at breakfast, right wing politics in mornings, centre left early afternoons, right at drive. Lots of ear bashing throughout the day. 2UE should take a long hard look at why 702 is doing so well – it beats 2GB for anyone under 65. The shock-jock audience is growing older and will,eventually, die. 2UE is right to try and build a younger audience – they went up in 45-54, so that’s a good start – but they need to get presenters who “get” the younger crowd. At the moment a lot of their “next generation of talkback” announcers are younger people who think old.

Nova listeners not liking Nova’s emphasis on entertainment and celebrities and moving away from actual news in their newsbreaks. Epic fail.

2UE – Dicko and Anjali was awesome. They lasted only few weeks as Anjali Rao – former CNN anchor left for another assignment.

A tip to the 2GB haters
You never highlight what Jones and Hadley are supposed to have said wrong because you don’t have any idea what they said on any issue in the first place
Making up your own ideas on what you think they said is not the same as knowing what they said.
Throwing out insults for reasoned argument is a cop out for lazy prejudicial thinking

People are so jealous of 2GB – Jones , Hadlee & Co that you will be waiting a long time before they fail! they weren’t even there for half the survey & they still won! you are a bunch of idiots you doubters- why don’t you learn something & listen to them!!

I listen to AJ and RH every bloody day thanks to a radio speaker in every room at my workplace. It would be nice to take a leak without having to hear these shows.

I am also happy to give you an example…………when Bob Brown resigned last year, Ray broadcast parody songs with the lyrics changed to suit Bobs current situation, now this is my opinion on what I heard. Bob Brown (though I never voted greens) did much more for his beliefs, and was much more proactive, and willing to get his hands dirty than Ray Hadley ever would sitting in an air cond studio.

Another point, Rays comments on tens failed breakfast show last year. What makes ray a TV expert? has he worked in TV? IS he an ex producer? Can he do better? ( I never watched the show either but I dont think I could produce a great morning coffee show).

Ray and Alan cater to a fifty plus audience who all think this country was better 30-40 years ago. The Whinge Fringe, and whatever these guys say, most of the listeners beleive, and they ring him and say “you should be PM!!!’, really?, I would love to make these guys PM, then I could call the talkback lines and say what a s–t job they are doing. Dont Buy the hype, its just entertainment, its not journalism.

I could only last one hour listening to the rubbish that 2UE were delivering ain the breakfast shift. “Dicko” is absolutely hopeless. Moved to 2GB but grow tired of Alan Jones’ constant negativity. I agree that 2UE should have kept Jason Morrison for breakfast. Their two best overall performers, John Stanley and Stuart Bocking, have been relegated to minor rolesHow could their management get it so wrong!
