Ten fails to build audience for Secrets and Lies as Love Child holds over 1m
Channel Ten has failed to build a bigger audience for its crime drama Secrets and Lies with the third episode pulling just 317,000 viewers last night as Nine’s rival drama Love Child had over 1m, preliminary overnight metro ratings from OzTam show.
Secrets and Lies, a multiplatform six-part murder mystery series being shown in the UK and remade by ABC Studios in the US, opened to 403,000 metro viewers on March 4, and dropped to 366,000 last week despite efforts to generate interest in the show by distributing 30,000 DVD’s of the first episode of show for free.
In Ten’s target demographic of people 25-54, Secrets and Lies ranked 24th, behind its soap operas Neighbours and The Bold and the Beautiful, which got 447,000 viewers yesterday and was the network’s fourth biggest show. And in all people it’s audience was 32nd, ranking just after Nine’s breakfast show Today.
Dear Ten Network. With Secret & Lies you were seduced by the producer’s pitch of multiplatform. Sorry but it was all bullshit. Did you ever watch Broadchurch? It worked because it was a brilliant piece of writing with great cast, direction and production. No multimedia hoopla in sight. The old rules still apply. Create great scripts for your target audience and the viewers will gradually return.
It’s not being remade in the UK. It’s being broadcast.

That’s very naughty of you, you’re comparing Secret and Lies with other Ten programs on at different times, and with the weeks highest rating programs in its own time slot.
@”In Ten’s target demographic of people 25-54″
That is ridiculous, that’s about 80% of the population watching then !
You can’t determine advertising schedules on such a broad demographic.
I tried, I truly did. but Secrets and Lies is beautifullly shot boredom. Just like no great novel was ever written by a committee, no great TV drama was devised by a multiplatform team and Excel!
Full of Bold and Beautiful meaningful staring instead of understandable dialogue and characters who have no character-development.
Another TEN disaster.
Isn’t anyone there going to seize hold of the place and shake it up – starting at the very top I’d recommend.
Dear Harry and Arfur, you should have been TV critics – not. But that’s just my opinion 🙂
They would get more viewers if they didnt have the time slot competingbwith love child. I have to decide which one watch and its hard to choose
Guess friends and I would be considered target audience.
We were having a House of Cards’ marathon. (Not sure if host bypassed the Netflix geoblock or just grabbed some torrents.)
Dunno if this means much, but struck me that I’d never heard of the show being discussed until reading this post. Quick poll of tute returned similar results. (Someone’s mum had watched it.)
