Ten’s 6pm news debut draws over 750,000 viewers

Ten’s new hybrid news and current affair show 10 News+ has launched to a national audience of 769,000 viewers.

The hour-long show, hosted by Amelia Brace and Denham Hitchcock, debuted with a mixed bag, as promised.

It featured the day’s news headlines and short packages, alongside interviews with PM Anthony Albanese, astronaut Chris Hatfield, and convicted drug smuggler Debbie Voulgaris — who made a tearful plea of innocence from a Taiwanese prison.

The show reached an audience of 769,000, with an average viewership of 291,000 at any given time.

It debuted in the toughest time slot on television, up against Seven and Nine’s flagship 6pm news bulletins. They topped the Oztam ratings for Monday night, with audiences of 2.32 million and 2.23 million, respectively — each drawing roughly three times the audience of 10 News+.

There’s still a long way to go, and a lot of entrenched viewing habits to dismantle if they are to compete with Seven and Nine’s top-rating programs. A splashy PR campaign wouldn’t go astray, either.

However, a truer picture of the show’s debut will become available once we account for catch up viewing, and those who watch segments on Youtube, and through Spotify — part of Ten’s off-kilter distribution strategy for the show.

The show’s executive producer Dan Sutton told Mumbrella the linear audience is just one part of the equation.

“We readily acknowledge that not everybody who wants to see what we’re doing is necessarily available at 6 o’clock every night,” he said. “We know that’s a busy time. But we’re there if you want to watch on linear.”

The debut of 10 News+ has also benefitted Deal Or No Deal, which has been moved from its 6pm timeslot — where it failed to make the top 30 in the ratings most nights — into a plum 7pm spot.

Last night’s 7pm debut featured guest contestant Sandra Sully — and the combination of a shiny new timeslot, a Ten legend opening the briefcases, and a nice lead-in from Ten News+, was enough to see the show draw 763,000 viewers, with an average of 351,000.
