The Age wins newspaper of the year
Fairfax Media’s The Age won newspaper of the year in the 90,000+ circulation category at last night’s PANPA Awards.
But among the biggest cheers of the night went to fellow Fairfax title The Press in Christchurch which won newspaper of the year in the 25,000 to 90,000 circulation in part for its handling of the earthquake disaster.
PANPA is the Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers Association.
The trophy for The Age saw the title move from Sydney to Melbourne. For the previous two years it was won by fellow Fairfax title the Sydney Morning Herald. The Australian did not enter this year.
Good paper.
The Oz sucks so bad they didn’t even enter.

But what about The Strathfield Scene – “highly commended” in the under 25,000 non-daily section.
A one year old community newspaper serving its readership and already winning praise.

The Age has deteriorated badly over the last few years in my opinion… although that could be because they’ve shifted away from the concept of balanced reporting and into full fledged ideological peddling.
If you believe what you read in The Age, every issue in society has a foundation built upon gay marriage ceremonies taking place atop melting polar icecaps.
Due respect with the above opinions, the Age is not a good paper. I doubt it has been a “good paper” for at least fifteen years. The best sign of this is how long it takes to read an average copy- 20 minutes at most. Probably a bit more than the Hun but considerably less than the Oz or AFR.
No doubt much of the above can be said about other papers and is a reflection of the media environment (i.e. decline of readership and quality). And the Age certainly still manages to have some good reporters (in politics and economics) and breaks some good stories but it is not better than the Australian or the Fin Review. The reality is that both national papers take themselves seriously. Looking at the breezy content, its focus on “life style” trends and its reduction of world news to a page or so, I find it hard to believe that the Age takes itself seriously at all.

Now The Strathfield Scene takes a good half hour to read – especially on the bus to Parramatta!
We’re never breezy – except on the weather pages.
