I think it’s worth noting that it is available but at the expense of giving them your personal information.

What price do I put on personal information like my gender, postcode and year of birth? Seriously if anyone offered me $1 I’d happily tell them.
For a site I spend so much time on, I’m happy to pay this small price to help them survive. After all, they’re not asking for my credit card.

Shame that Fairfax’s new comment mechanism prevents people on iPads from logging into their accounts to comment – simply giving the message ‘you must turn cookies on’.

Additionally, just to throw an additional two cents in – I don’t seriously believe that anyone is going to give two hoots about giving a potentially fake name, throw away email address, fake D.o.B and unconfirmed postcode to Fairfax – the Electoral Office and Australia Post knows more. Meh, it’s not so much a notion of privacy as it is generic worthless information – no doubt, this is just the start of ‘opt-in giving more information for more access to more content’ though.

Don’t celebrate yet. It appears it only works if you’re logged on… and it logs you off every day. So unless you obsessively click Logon the first time you visit (your preferred Fairfax site) every day, you’ll still see Auto Play kick in.

Punish your readers (autoplay) unless they log in (privacy issue) – It’s all backwards.
