The Avengers takes massive $13m on opening weekend

The Avengers has followed on from its strong opening day of $6m to take the title of top-grossing opening weekend in Australian box office history.

The superhero film has taken a massive $19.7m across both the 3D and 2D formats, opening across 621 screens.

UPDATE: The Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia only counts the official box office weekend from Thursday. Wednesday’s takings stand separately. As a result, the MPDAA reports The Avengers has taken $13m for a screen average of $21,398.

The record-holder remains Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt2, which in July took $18.4m in its opening weekend.
