The Dinner Party to screen at Dendy Canberra
The film The Dinner Party will screen at Dendy Cinemas in Canberra, after a successful debut at the National Film and Sound Archive.
“Trying to get this film into cinemas has been a hard push, mainly because we are unknown filmmakers, from a city [Canberra] that has seen little if any film come out of it and therefore an unknown market, but due to increasing demand for people to see it on the big screen, it will start screening at Dendy Canberra starting on February 21,” ” producer Brendan Sloane told Encore.
The fim’s national release through PackScreen was cancelled last year.
“After approaching many cinemas in Australia and not releasing as planned in 2010, I hooked up with Accent for a DVD release but held onto the cinema rights as I always believed this film would launch in Canberra,” explained Sloane. “The NFSA gave me a premiere and a Saturday matinee; they packed out to the point where cast, friends and family could not get tickets so at this point. All of a sudden the film was seen by people and the local – and now national – media as a success. Word started spreading and Dendy were aware, so when I called them to ask for screenings times, they gave me two screenings with the ability to have more if these screenings also pack out.”
The Dinner Party was directed by Scott Murden, and is inspired by a real crime. In the story, an unstable woman (Lara Cox) plots an evening to remember where the invited guests of her soiree are not guaranteed to leave the table alive.
“Apparently the DVD is a little late to hit shelves, so we may have a chance to confirm some more cinema screenings in Canberra and perhaps interstate as well – certainly if i start packing Dendy screens then I will be hitting the phone again to get this film into other states,” explained Sloane. “In any case, whether we run into more cinemas or just hold a few more sessions, we have discovered that Australians want to watch this film and are enjoying it, so as filmmakers we are very happy about this and have no doubt the DVD will do well.”
The screenings are scheduled for the following dates:
6:45pm Monday 21 February
6:45pm Wednesday 23 February
Bookings can be made at (02) 6221 8900

Watch out for the upcoming interview and article in the new Empire magazine.
As per usual there is a tonne of great feedback for Lara Cox’s performance and Oonagh Sherrard’s musical score. Australian audiences have also taken to Kai Harris’s performance as the larakkin, Freddy in the film – it seems the humour of Freddy is being very well recieved and enjoyed – well done Kai!
and thanks Dolly !
