The Guardian releases ‘Last Chance’ extinction documentary series

The Guardian has released a documentary series named ‘Last Chance’, focusing on “the extinction crisis and the people who care”.

The announcement:

The Guardian today launches Last Chance, a six-part video documentary series about the extinction crisis and the people who care.

More than 2,000 Australian species are under threat. Released daily, this series puts a spotlight on six species that are being pushed towards extinction and highlights the work of the passionate Australians fighting to save our wildlife.

Supported by opinion articles from leading environmentalists including Bob Brown and Tim Flannery, the first episode is available to watch on theguardian.com on April 07.

Guardian Australia’s climate and environment editor Adam Morton says: “The environment is a major issue bubbling beneath the surface of the election campaign. Last Chance shows up close how much it matters to people.”

In the series we meet:

  • Amanda Lilleyman, an academic expert in migratory shorebirds working to save the far eastern curlew
  • Josh Bowell, who co-founded the yellow-bellied glider project
  • Matt Shanks, a proud Nira Balluk man of the Taungurung Nation, who is focused on monitoring the bogong moth
  • Marilyn Connell, a volunteer protecting Mary River turtle habitat (affectionately known as the punk turtle)
  • Maria Mathis, a lifelong koala conservationist
  • And, Eva Czislowski, a volunteer with Carnaby’s Crusaders

Eva Czislowski is the youngest volunteer profiled. In 2021, at the age of 16, she organised a program that led to about 60 fellow students volunteering to help rebuild habitat for the Carnaby’s black cockatoo. She says: “My generation is incredibly angry and we must hold politicians accountable, but we must also act ourselves.”

Marilyn Connell says: “I’m sure that politicians and people in Canberra or even our local members don’t have any idea of the scale and impact that small community groups like ours have on threatened species in Australia.”

Launched in the lead-up to the federal election, this series spotlights the rolling extinction crisis in Australia and the urgency of environmental protections in the face of habitat and biodiversity loss through urban expansion and the impacts of climate change.
