That is just utterly cringe worthy. It just keeps getting worse as it goes on. I also love the fact the only way Australia gets the world cup is to steal it! This really is terrible on every front.

When combined with the Tourism Australia ad, we really are just pitching an Australia right out of the 70s & 80s.

A little harsh I think guys. Remember, you’re not the audience for this and the attitudes mimic how we British view our own efforts at these types of things – we’re also highly critical. Remember the London 2012 logo? I’m one of the few that actually thought that was pretty good, maybe I’m an eternal optimist.

Get behind your country. As an ‘outsider’ I thought this was nice. It told a story, rather than made a plea and played upon the things that Australia is famous for. Believe it or not, this is how people view Australia and why they love coming here… so celebrate that fact.

Looks more like Scooby-Doo to me. And don’t you just love that Julia Gillard’s office has all the grandeur of the local accountant’s office (no offence, bean-counters….). Is this really our leader?

It may be the case that filmmakers don’t always make great ads, but at 6’48” there was more than enough time for Phillip Noyce to demonstrate his enormous talent for telling incredible stories – this is disappointing stuff.
Why is it that a country filled with such a disproportionately large number of smart talented people (many of them not actually from the UK) seems to suffer performance anxiety every time we’re competing on the world stage?
Australia, you’re cooler and more beautiful than this.
I note that Hogan’s credit reads ‘Mick “Crocodile” Dundee’. If he’s ashamed to put his real name to this travesty, it bodes ill.

IMHO if we don’t win the 2022 World Cup bid, everyone (including Gillard) involved in this abortion of an idea & execution should be deported to the country that ends up winning the bid.

I think the fact that all us Aussies find it cringe-worthy means it’s probably done the job! Keep it mind it wasn’t made for us and just get behind the bid – even if it means wearing a round-brimmed hat with corks hanging off it, if that’s what it takes.

It’s hostage-speak: “Please give us the World Cup to make our dream come true”. Nothing about developing the game in Asia/Oceania. In fact, sod all about the game at all. FIFA wants to be know why it should award the biggest sporting event in the world to a particular bidder – the response that it would “make our dream come true” is such a spectacular misfire. Amateurish beyond measure.

I think it does the job. Why wouldn’t you want to visit Australia after watching it… Stop being a bunch of critical a**holes and get behind our country.

I just don’t really get how this has anything to do with football, or more to the point, how the makers THOUGHT it had anythign to do with football….

admittedly I stopped watching around the 3 minute mark, but up until then the only stadium I’d seen was an overhead shot of the MCG after the roo had jumped from the cliff by the apostles, re-emerged by the sydney harbour bridge, then decided to head back to melbourne again…its all quite baffling really.

I think they should have followed a similar vein of the 2000 Olympics and used kids to pull on the heart stings of the oldies on the voting committee.
I really do hope we win, but if TV rights revenue has a say, we will more than likely lose

These things are traditionally easy to pick apart and we all act appalled and cringe as Australia is represented in such a way. But, if you consider the continual strategy seems to be centered around similar type of themes then I think it is probably reasonable to assume that clever people have done their due diligence, and that it is truism that others view our country in this way and furthermore, their genuinely intrigued and interested in these stereotypes!
Personally, I would’ve loved to see more made of Australian’s love for sport, but overall I thought the biggest crime of the whole production is that for 6 1/2 minutes not a lot happens…it’s kinda boring…

One million on the ad and forty-nine million pork-barrelling the electors, should we have expected much more?

The concept is nice, not brilliant, certainly not good enough to sway voters (watch the US and Qatar versions), but still a decent attempt.

What is driving me absolutely crazy is the use of the PM to open and close the clip … she has no charisma, never has, never will … if Obama wasn’t good enough to make the US clip, surely our bozo of a leader should have been left on the bench.

Tourism Aust international videos and bid videos like this are undoing all the hard work which our budding film industry is doing. We finally start producing films which have the slick and professional feel (we still have a way to go) to showcase us as not bumbling idiots stuck on the past, and then this shit happens to put us back in our box

Hmmm, tough one here.

If I’m watching an advert to entice me to go to Finland, I don’t want to know what their restaurants are like, what their broadband speeds are, what their economic backbone is or what their own citizens think of their tourist ads. I want to see snow and reindeers.

But that’s if I’m going on a holiday.

The fact is, this is a pitch for a Major sport event, not for the FIFA Executive commitee to come for a holiday. Needed to focus on our infrastucture more, the safety of our country (other than King St on a Saturday night) and our very, VERY rich sporting heritage which is second to none.

Highlight the fact that we ANNUALY host MAJOR sports event already such as the Australian Open, the F1 and Moto GP’s, we’ve recently had the Olympics and Commenwealth games, so we know what we’re doing.

So much criticism, yet so few ideas on how it could be done better.
I think it’s worth mentioning, as have others, that this segment was made for a very specific audience who are likely to recognise Hoges, Thorpe et al. I can understand the cultural cringe element but it shows is that Australia can have a laugh at itself, although I suspect that’s a long way from the truth given the hysterical reaction to the vid. It also shows that the nation’s leaders and prominent people are right behind the bid.
Maybe they should have focused on the real Australia and featured some rat-tailed bogans doing burnouts in a suburban street or perhaps some footage of Tony Abbot screaming stop the boats.

I read all the comments before I watched the video. Seriously people – lighten up and let yourself be entertained. When did we grow up and be so cynical.

But of course this video IS NOT OUR BID. it’s a 6 minute ‘vibe piece’ (love it or hate it) at the end of our bid presentation, which covered all the aspects you rightly highlight. You can check out the full preso at the FIFA website if you’re inclined. incidentally, the Aus pres features two other videos on which no one has seen fit to comment. That’s the power of Tim (Burrowes, not Cahill).

Watching this gave me goose bumps … bad ones … feverish and shamefully embarrased ones … All we needed was some other national “treasures”covering themselves in boot polish to top it off completely !

What better way to sell the bid to an organisation that is reeling from corruption charges than to say we want to win but not by stealing it.

And as for the ad itself…cheesy maybe, but it does perfectly capture all the things Australia is famous for and are the reasons people come to visit our country.

As far as I could see, only two sane comments here. Advertising 101: you need to understand your audience. The audience for this was approximately 20 x 70 year olds who live in ‘Big Event’ land, get chauffered everywhere and boozed to the eyeballs by the biggest and corniest names in the world. The only thing most of them truly know about Australia is, unfortunately, Croc Dundee and kangaroos. True students of the art will understand that there is as much a place for Doors Plus advertising as there is for the Big Ad. As long as it’s relevant to who’s being targeted. You don’t have to like it. Phillip Noyce doesn’t care if you don’t like it. The only opinions that matter are in Switzerland.

I read the comments first and then watched the video. To be honest the only embarrassing, boring and negative thing I saw were the comments. I’m am so tired of all these ‘new age’ people ranting on about how something that looks outdated is somehow pathetic and bad. Tim, you mention that the video will only please those who find comedy from 25 years ago funny. Well to be totally honest with you the best comedies were those from the 80’s! It was really well done. The CGI could have been better, sure, and what do you do when your temporary PM used to be the tea lady in Canberra. You do your best.

So i’m in healthcare PR and if i get a shot at my dream gig – say the global Pfizer business – and then I take the advice of the strategists who put this together, i should produce a video of how clever, diverse and dripping with celebs we are at “little old Palin”, and then finish with the strapline “Come on Pfizer Inc. This isn’t an ‘ad for the country’. It’s a pitch to host a World Cup – and it’s being pitched in Zurich in front of aging execs whose knowledge of Australia, and most other contenders, would largely be based on stereotypes. My money says this would’ve been well received, they probably recognised Mick Dundee with a laugh, and the video would’ve enhanced our chances at winning. Gillard wasn’t doing funny either, she was being a PM.

We didn’t win the bid, and economics rather than a pitch video is the likely reason for Qatar winning the vote. Qatar’s video was packed with stereotypes too, as expected. Decisions like this seldom turn on the merit of ‘marketing’ or ‘advertising’. The videos support the pitch, they don’t *make* the pitch.

While the video portrayed some Aussie culture we can all be proud of, the tone prevalent throughout the post and many comments touches our most embarrassing stigma – tall poppy syndrome.

But the main problem was not conveying any passion for football whatsoever. Showing young, multicultural people playing the “beautiful” game, maybe even kicking footballs in front of Ayer’s Rock or on a beach. Instead: dull people swimming on a dull-looking Bondi (it’s an ugly enough beach to start with, and not as iconic visually as Australia thinks, save for the name – most tourists are very disappointed when they eventually visit it, but blow away by Manly and elsewhere), a gratuitous close-up of some woman’s chest as she exercises, and then a Cathy Freeman/roadkill segment. Wtf?

Horrible. Horrible. Horrible.

All of the celebrities used in the clip are retired. Hogan has that nasty PR surrounding him so why TF he was chosen for this baffles me. Cathy Freeman stopped running years ago. Thorpie doesn’t swim anymore and is three times the shadow of his former self. Elle McPherson is stunning, but retired years ago and hasn’t lived here for as long as I can remember. Why cling to these people? Where is Hugh Jackman? Where is Kylie Minogue? Where is Nicole Kidman? Where are the current faces of our country?

And for all you people saying get behind your country. I’m sorry, but the tired old cliche’s shown in this clip DO NOT represent the country that I live in. How can we be passionate about these myths that are not a part of our reality? The majority of us do not have red dirt in ou backyard, nor do we have kangaroos crossing the road. We do not drive down a long road in the middle of the desert to get from A to B. We play soccer on grass, not dirt.

We have moved on from these tired old images of Dundee Australia. That was THIRTY years ago. THIRTY!! It might have been appealing then, but it is not now. Start showing something different about this country and perhaps people will take notice.

What are our cities like? What are our people like? What are some of the landmarks people haven’t seen before in our campaigns? What is our infrastructure like? How passionate are we about soccer/sport/football? There is much more diversity and information to be shown that was not portrayed in this video.

While there are very few supporting the ad in this forum, unfortunately the majority of the Australian public appear to agree that it was a pretty embarrassing effort.

The final straw that totally lost it for me, other than the awkward hand holding intro from Elle and Frank, was the outback soccer game scene – with the young asian guy in goals and the middle eastern female striker. Oh, and the bit that had the animated Kangaroo!?!

Soccer is a game often won by outrageous cheating – on the field and off.

The premise of stealing the cup is flawed in the first place. The other question is logistical. How long would it take a Kangaroo to get from Europe to Australia?
