The Maze Runner outshines Adam Sandler film Pixels on opening weekend to top box office

The second instalment of The Maze Runner series topped the box office at the weekend, taking more than $1m more than nearest competitor Straight Outta Compton.

The NWA biopic slipped to second spot taking $2.246m, while The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials managed $3.564m on 374 screens.

Only one other film managed to crack the million dollar mark, with new Adam Sandler film Pixels taking $1.995m on 445 screens.
