Tom Hanks’ A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood fails to crack the top five in its first weekend at the box office
Box office debutant, A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood, failed to crack the the top five over the long weekend, taking just $880,393 from 249 screens. The film stars Tom Hanks as the American entertainer Fred Rogers – a role for which he has been nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar – and Matthew Rhys as the Esquire journalist tasked with writing his profile.
The film was beaten out by last week’s newcomers Bad Boys For Life and Dolittle. Bad Boys For Life, which sees Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reprising their roles from the early 2000s cop franchise, maintained its hold at the top taking $3.49m from 371 screens amounting to a running total of $11m in Australia.
Meanwhile, Dolittle, starring Robert Downey Jr as author Hugh Lofting’s Doctor Dolittle, came in second with $2.2m from 331 screens, benefitting from the last weekend of the school holidays. The film was down 34% from last weekend, but has earned a total of $7.4m so far.
