Triple J to bring back One Night Stand regional event amidst festival crisis

Triple J is bringing back One Night Stand – the youth broadcaster’s one-day, all ages regional music festival – after a five-year hiatus.

One Night Stand will see triple j partner with Music Australia to raise funds for Australian music industry charity Support Act.

“The ABC is one of the biggest supporters of Australian music and live performance,” said ABC’s MD David Anderson.

“At a time when the local music industry needs support, the ABC is thrilled to come to the party with the return of triple j’s One Night Stand.

“We recognise the festival landscape in Australia has changed since we last put on a One Night Stand.

“Triple j and the ABC is working with Support Act and Music Australia on how best we can use this event to increase much needed investment in the Australian music industry, while staying true to One Night Stand’s core mission of delivering a one-of-a-kind event, accessible to the public, based in regional Australia.”

Head of triple j, Double J and ABC Country, Lachlan Macara says: “We’re beyond stoked to be bringing back triple j’s One Night Stand in 2024 to continue our support of Australian artists and provide an opportunity for young people in the regions to get around some live music.

“We’re busy working on an incredible line up sure to create another One Night Stand for the history books and we can’t wait to see where we’ll be heading in 2024.”

This comes after a number of major Australian festivals, including Splendour In The Grass, Mona Foma, and Groovin The Moo, collapsed this year.

Appearing on the latest episode of Mumbrella’s one-on-one podcast series, ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd called on ABC to step up for triple j and Australian music fans.

“Triple j is incredibly important, particularly for independent artists in Australia, and they have been amazing. They’ve created so many careers,” Herd said.

“They are struggling, I think, with falling audiences at the moment, and, you know, new management over there. I’m interested to see how they adjust.

“I also think the ABC has a really important role, given it’s a public broadcaster, in supporting local content, and that includes not just screen content, but music content.”

triple j’s One Night Stand will return later this year, with the date, location, and line-up, revealed soon.
