TV networks told to seek compensation for ‘substandard’ Essendon games after doping ban
Network Seven and Foxtel have been urged to seek compensation from the AFL with predictions the decision to ban 34 past and present Essendon players over systematic doping at the club will hit TV audiences.

The Friday night schedule for 16 has already been done.
Chris and Simon make sense, Mark makes sensational.
I think the networks should seek compensation for having to cover Carlton games (sorry Sydney people, you won’t get that AFL joke, it’s about a team that doesn’t have Buddy Franklin in it)
@Bucks is Back – exactly… 2015 saw Carlton given 6 Friday night games and they have been barely competitive for 2 years. Spare me Mark, you’re just trying to get your name in the media. Essendon still has one of the biggest membership bases in the league and an even bigger following of non-members. People will watch, especially in the southern states.
People will still watch, this isn’t tennis.
Some people would watch. But many would not put up with another series of Friday night games that were as boring as the Carlton games were last year. And the difference would be that unlike some hopefuls tuning in ‘hoping’ for a decent match, viewers can now make alternative arrangements well in advance for these matches knowing they will be a certain flop. Clients expect compensation when TV networks shortfall. Why shouldn’t the TV networks expect compensation from the AFL for under delivery?
“People will still watch” ? Doubt it
How did those ratings look when GWS were getting thrashed by 100 points a game a few years ago?
I guarantee you, watching Essendon get thrashed will not be a ratings bonanza. No one wants to watch uncompeitive sport
Mark is right, the AFL product has been devalued – whether the AFL is “responsible” legally for Essendond’s actions – is perhaps another point for any legal eagles on here..?
The only good thing to come out of this is it’s almost certain Carlton will beaten to the wooden spoon this season…
And the AFL should get a bonus from the networks if some of the lesser teams play well?
Please. It’s sport.
The young Essendon players they bring in might play well. What then? Give some money back?
The networks know what product they are buying. They know they might get draws or walkovers, or all sorts of different outcomes.
Essendon only has 2 Friday night games in 2016. Do some research before commenting you buffoons
We meet again Pepsi Monster…..
I hate Essendon, I never used to watch their games but knowing now that they will be destroyed on a weekly basis I will definitely be tuning in.
Steve and Bucks is Back should stop sitting together
