TV ratings wrap: FIFA Women’s World Cup a ratings sensation for Seven

The first game of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia scored more than one million metro viewers on Thursday night, coming out on top in a night packed with sports and entertainment programs.

Despite losing Sam Kerr to a calf injury she suffered at training the day before, the Matildas won its first match against Ireland thanks to a penalty score by Stephanie Catley.

Fans at home flocked to Seven’s broadcast, with 1.237 million metro viewers tuning in, 695,000 stayed for the post-game and 664,000 watched the pre-game.

The national audience was a whopping 1.74 million national viewers and peaked at 2.28 million. It scored a 47.6% commercial audience share in total people, 53.9% in 25 to 54s and 57.8% in 16 to 39s.

Seven said another 184,000 people watched on its streaming service 7plus.

Lewis Martin, Seven’s head of network sport and MD of Seven Melbourne, said: “The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 is off to a flying start on Seven and 7plus. It was fantastic to see the Matildas in action last night and their victory over Ireland was a great start to their campaign to claim the Cup.”

The Women’s World Cup turned out to be a strong opponent for the mid-year Ashes, which was on day two of the fourth test yesterday.

Session one brought in 546,000 metro viewers, while 378,000 tuned in for lunch.

Ten’s local adaption of the UK format Dogs Behaving (Very) Badly also premiered last night. However, it only pulled in 308,000 metro viewers.

Seven won the night with a 40.3% network share and a 31.8% primary channel share.
