TVS releases live streaming iPhone app

Community broadcaster Television Sydney has launched an iPhone app – allowing viewers to live stream its shows.

The announcement:

Television Sydney has become the first non-news, free to air television station in Australia to provide live streaming for all its shows as it continues to expand into the digital realm to allow viewers to watch their programs in more ways.

The Television Sydney (TVS) iPhone app allows viewers to watch their favourite TVS shows wherever they are, 24 hours a day.

The application also has an integrated program guide allowing users to browse through the television schedule and program information.

The CEO of TVS Rachel Bentley says TVS is committed to making the most of new technology to allow its viewers to access their favourite programs.

“At TVS we want to make sure that everything you can watch at home on your television is available on your smart phone, as there are so many ways people can now watch their favourite shows,” Ms Bentley says.

“This is why we are proud to be leading the way by providing the free TVS app, which takes in our full TVS schedule, live to your phone with no exceptions.

“Already we are working on expanding the application to include Android mobile phones, with future updates in the pipeline allowing viewers to bookmark their favourite shows so they never miss an episode.”

The app was developed by Cyberdesign Works, which specialises in innovative and functional iPhone applications and has a strong history of working with media companies, including TVS and Yahoo7.

“The work of the Cyberdesign developers has been invaluable in building the app, and we know everyone will find it clean, simple and easy to use,” Ms Bentley says.

She says at the moment Australians can access niche channels such as news or selected programming, but this is the first time all the shows from an entire free-to-air station are available.

“TVS will present a new program line up in 2011, which will feature a new series called Science Spectrum and a small Business Show called Small Biz Central. And viewer favourites such as the critically acclaimed Shelf Life, Classic Restos, Yianni’s World and The Schlocky Horror Picture Show will of course be back with new episodes.”

“We want to be leading the way in providing free digital content and better access for our viewers, and this is just the first step in this process” Ms Bentley says.

TVS is a not for profit Community Television Channel broadcasting from the University of Western Sydney’s Penrith campus, and is found on Digital Channel 44.

TVS is a founding member of the Australian Community Television Alliance, and is committed to providing an outlet for programs exploring the diverse communities and people in Sydney.
