Twitter charts spike in traffic from #spill

Twitter has released data on the huge spike in traffic from yesterday’s aborted leadership challenge against Julia Gillard.

The social media platform says there were more than 247,000 related tweets between 11am and 11pm, with the number of tweets peaking at 1,504 tweets per minute at its peak, shortly after Kevin Rudd announced he would not challenge.

This is the first time Twitter has released the usage numbers around a Australian major news event and comes as the company moves to establish its Australian office.

Just some perspective. While 247,000 tweets is a big number it was over 12 hours. That is an average of 343 per minute.

How does it stack up to, say, TV viewing (the other electonic media with daily minute-by-minute data)? Remember that a TV rating is measuring the average minute of a programme.

Well, the average minute’s TV viewing between 11am and 11pm in Australia yesterday was 4.215 million.
