Bruce Willis in two big-grossing films as Goddess hangs on in box office top ten

Hollywood action man Bruce Willis stars in two of the biggest films of last weekend, helping to bring in more than $6 million with G.I Joe: Retaliation and A Good Day to Die Hard.
Australian film Goddess is also still in the top 10 films from the weekend box office, competing with Willis’ action flicks, animated family film The Croods, and sci-fi romance The Host.
The musical comedy starring Magda Szubanski has performed well in the three weeks since its debut in the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia’s top 20 list, where it made more than half a million. It slipped from position six to 10 this week.
Village Roadshow are likely to take a loss on Goddess. There was an extensive Print & Advertising campaign which included TV adverts but clearly it has no word of mouth. It is a good example of a film where the commercial packaging of cast seemed more important than the script and the direction and even then it seems this cast just couldn’t sustain bums on seats.
David Stratton has just given G.I Joe Retaliation 1/2 out of 5 on At the movies. “This is quite simply a dreadful film,” he said. Just watching the trailer, I believe him.
Nice to know that very little changes and that Hollywood style glossy animation is sandwiched like Bologna sausage between the fluffy air filled bread of two typical Bruce Willis pics, to make up the top three Australian box office hits.
If the phenomenal success of Goddess has not been realised yet, then something is rotten in the state of Oz film making. I sincerely hope that it has been recognised and that the power of this very fine film can be further enhanced by a continuation of the genre.
Let’s hope that the Die Hard mould associated with Mr Willis’s
fine work, can be equally successful in the case of Goddess. I would like very much to see Goddess two, three and more.
I wish the continuing success of Goddess every ounce of luck for the future, but I add the caution (entirely my personal opinion) that the story must be advanced, rather than relying upon cliché, and that the overplaying of one character in particular be nipped in the bud.
it’s a flop…..a mainstream release like that has to gross at least $3m + to cover the distribution costs alone ; and who knows how much they put up as an advance …. Roadshow will be weeping into their matzo ball soup by now.
