When in London
Live television news is tough. After all, you can’t always have a reporter on the ground wherever a story breaks.
But when the earthquake is in Italy, it takes an admirably confident network to tell your reporter that as they’re in approximately the same timezone, they may as well go and stand out in the street for a live cross.
A far as Dr Mumbo knows, the big red double decker buses are better known in London than they are in Italy.
Nine news. Always style over substance.
What’s the problem? Regular practice of many international networks. ABC America regularly cross to their London bureau for European stories.
Yep, but the yanks wouldn’t have a clue about where anywhere is. One would hope Australians are a bit smarter than that (except for those who watch 9 News obviously!).
In 1975, I was stopped in The Strand in London by an American tourist who wanted to know where she could catch a train to Paris.
I told her there was a boat train that went from Victoria Station. She was utterly bewildered to discover a sea crossing was involved.
I notice Channel 9 has been doing this a bit lately and it is a strange look – you’re hundreds of miles away, but just go stand outside.
The Today Show has also been annoying by labeling every news story as “breaking news” or “happening now”. It’s not “breaking news”, it’s just NEWS!
He’s easy on the eye.
When the earthquake happened, Tom reported it live from where he was at the time; London including footage from the scene. He didn’t happen to be in Central Italy when it happened or should he have transported himself immediately?
On this mornings Today show he was live in the town surrounded by rubble and rescuers as aftershocks continued.and sections of the street were collapsing.
Must be a slow news day Dr. Mumbo. But don’t let facts get in the way of a futile click bait story.
