New captain for the Death Star: Who will be the new boss of Google Australia?
With Maile Carnegie jumping ship the biggest advertising platform in Australia is left without a leader. Alex Hayes looks at potential candidates to fill the role.
A couple of years ago it was fashionable amongst digital publishers to describe Google as the ‘Death Star’ – a force capable of destroying the traditional media in Australia by sucking up the majority of dollars in search and display advertising.
Unfortunately for journalists looking to capitalise on the SEO potential that trend has died away – mainly with the demise of the ill-fated publishers’ advertising exchange – but the dominance of Google has very much not dwindled.
So it’s unsurprising yesterday’s news that Maile Carnegie was leaving Google after nearly three years in the job will set the hares running with speculation of who will take the top spot.
Bit like being coach of the Aussie Cricket team from 97-03 isn’t it? I mean, how bad a CEO would you have to be to balls that role up.
I have my money on Jason (if he even wants the role)
Company name aside, it seems like a highly undesirable position. You’d really only use it as a career leap opportunity for your CV.
Has any serious thought or research gone into this piece?
Tabloid journalism. I am Mumbrellas biggest fan but this piece is ever so weak.
Hi Clutching,
Thanks for the comment – and indeed the several you leave everyday under various nom de plumes. Tabloid journalism is one of those statements that’s bandied about a lot, could you elaborate on where you think it’s taken place in the piece? Clearly you have a lot of insight on this one – care to share some?
For the record, plenty of research went into it.
Cheers,
Alex – editor, Mumbrella
By all accounts, Pellegrino should be the man.
@clutching at straw, seems like you are doing exactly that. Its an opinion piece and I thought all the proposed candidates where worthy of a mention. thanks for sharing Alex.
Thanks Alex, perhaps I was a little harsh? Again, I love Mumbrella; you are a breath of fresh air in a corporate compliant world; you tell it as it is and thank you for that.
A couple of names on that list made me spit out my tea and exclaim: “Are you avin a laugh?”, all the same. We shall see.
OMG, if some of those names are even suggested there would be exodus from Google! Many people left those organisations to join Google to get away from some of the names mentioned!
Hi Alex,
As a reader I find your editorial responses to people leaving comments harsh.
If someone has a comment, it’s a comment. That’s it.
It’s not some barb for an editor to go guns blazing and try to take them on.
I’ve noticed more of this over time.
Tone it down. Not sure why you’re so insecure around your articles.
