A lot of people are underestimating the impact Google TV will have. This is not like anything we’ve seen in the STB/TV area before. This is Android for TVs. It’s an operating system layer that can exist on any IP-connected television, cable box, set top box, PVR, etc. It has an app store so people can download applications direct to their TV or TV-connected box, which can put ‘sit back’ experience for every content offering the consumer could want. Plus it puts a layer of conformity across what at the moment are a hugely fragment array of TV-based offerings.
People keep focusing on what the limitations of the hardware devices that are being launched with Google TV, but it’s only the beginning. They are merely demonstration units – Google will strike more and more deals with people building IP-connected units to use Google TV instead of developing their own software layer.
