Sydney radio ratings: Kyle and Jackie O in at number one in FM for Kiis as 2DayFM audience halves

No “plus” signs? Does this mean the overall radio audience is dropping?

Congratulations to 2GB being Sydney’s No:1 station across all timeslots. What’s remarkable is that Alan Jones was away for a huge part of the survey period and 2GB still won by a huge margin. Well done guys!

This is not at all a surprise. Whatever the haters think of Kyle and Jackie O, an objective look at the show itself reveals it to be superior to any of the other breakfast programs. You only have to look at the hot mess that is 2Day FM’s new morning crew to see what I mean. Despite featuring people that have been in radio a very long time, there is simply no on-air chemistry between any of them. Love or (understandably) hate Kyle, there’s no doubting that he and Jackie are a powerhouse. Whilst I do not look forward to his inevitable gloating on the matter, any gloating (at least for now) would be justified. The very heavily promoted ($$$) new 2Day Fm team reached roughly a third of K&J’s previous number at the end of last year (10.4 by K&J last year to just 3.8 this year for 2Day). But the real magic is in the over figures for the station which almost doubled its overall numbers. Wow. Austereo execs will be sh*tting themselves right now.

Whoa… I don’t like them, but Kyle and Jackie must be getting a huge bonus.
I’ve read they took a pay cut to move, so that obviously comes with “extras”.

Just as I predicted last year on mumBrella – Kyle and Jackie O at number one the first survey after switching stations. Sydney’s record in showing loyalty to big name radio stars when they switch stations remains intact. I predict that next survey Kyle’s show will be alone at number one and KIIS will be the number one FM station. ARN took a risk signing Kyle and building a new station around him but it has proved a stunning success and with WS-FM they will deliver the knockout punch to the other stations. And no, I don’t work for ARN.

If I were ARN I would be pleased with the ratings.
Also not surprised that WSFM and Smooth both gained share.
Whilst the mix/kiis rebrand has worked, some listeners would have move away as the rebrand skews the station much younger now.

2GB breakfast dominance was maintained for the period becuase they are using Chris Smith to replace Alan when he’s away now instead of Andrew Moore. Smart move.

Ignoring it’s equal #1 with WSFM… on FM

Yes, 2GB proves that AM has what it takes to deliver viable audiences to advertisers, and with 2CH, and 2UE also increasing, there’s life in AM despite the young things at agencies who turn their noses up at old technology thinking otherwise. Baby boomers are born to rule, and have the disposable income to vote with their wallets. Agencies and advertisers ignore AM at their peril.

And this proves that 4 people hosting breakfast radio and competing to speak causes audiences to switch no wonder 2Day is failing… You can’t have 4 massive personalities on at one time…. Worse still when they interview someone and compete to ask questions. I think Sophie and Mel (full time) would work. Ditch the rest…

Can the increase across the board be put down to the new company doing the ratings and possibly their different way of calculating and recording numbers?

Not surprised with the ratings plummet for 2dayfm…..the new team is soooooo bad. Listened to them for a week before K&J went back on air after xmas and can safely say it is the worse radio show I’ve ever listened to. What Merrick, Jules & Sophie lack is the raw/genuine traits of Kyle & Jackie O’s show. K&J keep it real and share everything about their lives which is why they have such loyal fans. A lot of their listeners feel a connection with them and can relate to a lot of things they talk about. They’re naturally funny without having to rehearse and ‘produce’ lame jokes which a lot of other stations do. They just wing it which gives it the ‘keep it real’ advantage.

Don’t you mean Amanda & Jonesy were up 3.1 points? Which actually equals like 50% not 3.1%.

Totally agree with your sentiments, Dave (#5) – except for one tiny detail.
The first AM broadcasts took place around 1920 (but very few people had receivers to listen to them), while FM was patented in 1933 and the first stations were on air before WWII. So much for AM being old technology – so is FM! The same young things at agencies who turn their noses up at AM are reflected in the broader community by those who “wouldn’t listen to AM because all you get is bad news”. I have three kids who are perfect examples – and their knowledge of Australian and international events is abysmal as a result.

Reaffirming that the majority of FM radio listeners thoroughly enjoy hearing about poo, vomit, wee, diarrhea, poo, lesbians, poo, sex and poo before Breakfast and whilst driving to work.

If what Kyle and Jackie O present is on air “chemistry” then it’s a sad day for broadcast talent. This doesn’t demonstrate “good radio”, it merely highlights we have a generation of listeners who have grown up developing their concept of humour around episodes Big Bang Theory. \
Lets see how ARN cope with Kyle’s behaviour when he’s bores of his shiny new studios.
Credit where it’s due: much applause for Amanda Keller’s success, though it must be acknowledged – she does carry that show rather single-handedly.

Sorry Aussie_Austridge, but Kyle & Jackie O are equal 3rd, not No:1 as you state. 2GB is No:1 across all timeslots. Radio is radio, and all stations are listened to on the same set, especially now with Digital radio as all are on now the same “band”. With DAB+ to now differentiate between AM and FM is anachronistic, and is the same as saying SBS is the No:1 UHF TV station and Ch 7 is the No:1 VHF one.

Compelling, interesting, relevant, pertinent content will always find an intelligent audience. Rubbish will also find an audience and it’s your choice which you choose to be associated with…

I used to sit in the car driving my young teenage daughter to school listening to Kyle and Jackie O on 2Day-Fm… and it would embarrass the hell out of me… so when they changed stations… we stayed behind and still listen to 2Day-FM… but much as I HATE HATE HATE K & J’O… what’s left on 2DAY-FM in the mornings is just plain bad – at least with K & J’O I might get the odd laugh – now I just cringe – although not any more – the daughter has plugged into her iphone and I’ve swapped back to the “old” AM and 702…

I am not suprised at all that Kiis 106.5 with Kyle and Jackie O has rated as number 1
as I knew this would happen because there is no better Radio Team than Kyle and Jackie O. I have been a Today FM Fan for more than 20 years but once they lost Kyle and Jackie O they lost me as well and many many more.
It suprises me that the Management of Televison and Radio who Greatly need the fans
dont care when they are letting Staff go of the Fans that keep them there because if they did Today FM still would be number 1 not at the bottom.
Today FM management wanted to dictate to Fans how bad Kyle was because they listened to the other small minded people that wrote for the Daily Telegraph and other
Media Personalities that were just so jeleous and small minded in regard to mostly Kyle but what they forgot is that we the Fans love Kyle and I will follow him to the end of this Earth so who lost? TODAY FM

As much as people knock Kyle and Jackie O – they are very popular with the audience and media buyers alike – which is all that counts really when you are a Commercial Radio station . Media critics dont mean zip. These two are really talented – they know their audience and know how to entertain them . I cant believe 2day – fm management let them go – no matter how difficult or expensive they were . I reckon 2Day’s management will now be under huge pressure from the board and shareholders . Kyle and and Jackie O will probably seem like pussycats compared to what they are about to experience.

The Edge isn’t on the list because it doesn’t (officially) cover all of Sydney. Even though it is now on the same DAB stream as WS and KIIS.
