A guide to the Paris climate change talks for marketing and communications people
On Monday the UN Climate Summit 2015 will begin in Paris. Andrew Woodward looks at what do people in the media/marketing world need to know about the talks.
When I first started working in the industry, I was told by one of my first bosses that marketing and communication was simple – it is about getting people do things they would normally not do.
We want them to buy way more than they need – more in volume, quality, functionality and frequency. That basic philosophy drove marketing for the past half a century.
It is called consumerism. It came after half a century when there were two world wars, punctuated by a great depression. Peace, mass manufacturing, economic development, credit cards, air travel, globalisation, the internet and electronic commerce fuelled an orgy of consumerism. Sadly that party time is officially over.
Great summation. Thanks Andrew. Let’s hope the required progress is made.
My only other thought is that whoever decided to hold a climate change conference in Northern Europe in December needs to be shot. It should be held in Dubai in July with someone making sure the aircon is faulty.
Richard Branson had it right – it’s a great money-making opportunity and it’s brought out all the snake-oil salesmen and big government agitators. Like most overhyped causes, it is rapidly unraveling as the public wakes up to the exaggeration.
Thanks @Spinner for your learned views. It’s unusual to find a climate scientist, who is clearly so much smarter than all the other climate scientists, here on Mumbrella to tell us the truthiness.
@Spinner yes, thanks mate. Your no doubt well-informed opinion is so needed in this crisis of PR spin. Thank christ for people like you, Alan Jones, Andrew Bolt, The Nationals, the Coal lobby and a mate of mine who says climate change is BS because when he goes on surfing trips down the coast “you can’t even see the pollution.”
You’re skating on this ice with this article Andrew.
Where are your facts and evidence when stacked up against Spinner’s cogent piece.
Out they come – the Climate Vilification Squad! They’ll be making noises all week.
They see @Spinner’s comment, and out come the torches and pitch-forks.
God forbid there would be any diversity of opinion.
@Loller’s “all other climate scientists” refers to once-were-scientists compromised by promises of tenure and funding, who’ll say/do anything for a grant, and do.
@Rawnocerous invokes his parade of ‘villains’ to denounce an opinion he’s scared of.
Why can’t you people engage in debate?
Science is never settled. Never. If you think it’s “settled” then you don’t understand science. There is much to debate. Grow up, and engage.
